The Biological Sciences Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for undergraduate students in a variety of Biological Science projects. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student’s chosen area of study.

Examples of LANL projects in Biological Science include, but are not limited to:

  • Studying the growth and optimizing cultivation conditions of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae

  • Methods development for characterization and quantification of biopolymer production in algae

  • Improving the biomass productivity of algae biofuel production strains

  • Identification of growth promoting bacteria for algae cultures

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’sDegree program in any Biological Science discipline. Examples of BiologicalScience disciplines include: Biology,Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and Biophysics

  • Must be enrolled inat least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering freshmenmust provide documentation indicating matriculation into an undergraduatedegree program.

Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Skills:

Students selectedfor UGS internships in Biological Sciences are most competitive when theypossess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Computer programming in support of scientific data acquisition or analysis

  • Experimental techniques currently used within your selected biological science subfield(s)

  • Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting

Additional Details:

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
