Los Alamos National Laboratory Boilers & Pressure Safety Engineer (Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:
Configuration management support.
Modification definition and control.
Implementation of the authorization basis.
Technical baseline maintenance.
Monitoring, tracking, and trending of major systems.
Definition of maintenance requirements.
Troubleshooting; root cause analysis.
Preparation of detailed corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations.
Engineered equivalency analysis.
Provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program and the Conduct of Maintenance (CoM).
Provide construction code evaluation and interruption.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineer 2 (Boilers and Pressure Safety Systems) ($76,800-$125,600):
Proficiency with personal computers.
Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering with expertise in pressure systems.
Working knowledge of ASME piping code B31.3 or B31.9.
Working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII.
Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.
Working knowledge of non-destructive testing techniques and welding processes ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections V and IX.
Experience and knowledge in sizing, inspection, repair, and replacement of pressure relieving devices.
Ability to develop reports for senior managers.
Experience in computer aided design, for example Compress and CAESAR II.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET university with minimum 4-5 years of related experience.
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the System Engineer for Boilers and Pressure Safety Engineer (Engineer 3) level requires:
Engineer 3 (Boilers and Pressure Safety Systems) ($84,300-$139,000):
Experience and knowledge of ASME piping codes B31.1, B31.3, B31.5, B31.8, B31.9, and B31.12.
Demonstrate considerable knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections I, IV, and VIII, National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors NB-23, and standards related to design, construction, installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, repair, alteration, and re-rating of boilers and pressure vessels, and piping systems.
Experience and knowledge of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-for-Service.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply codes, standards, laws, and regulations related to boiler and pressure vessel safety.
Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews data; reports findings; interprets results and makes recommendations.
Working skill in the use of boiler/pressure vessel inspection procedures, processes, and tools.
Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
Demonstrated expert experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance.
6-10 years of relevant work experience.
AWS certified welding inspector (CWI).
National Board (NB) 23 Authorized Inspector or working knowledge capable of passing the NBIC Authorized Inspector Examination (in service inspection) and the “A” endorsement.
Familiarity with quality programs necessary for the ASME and NBIC “U”, “R”, and “RV” stamps.
Experience as an “Owner User” in accordance with ASME/NB-23.
Power Plant operational and maintenance work experience.
Demonstrated sound knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance is preferred.
Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, safety basis interaction, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE non-reactor nuclear and high hazard facilities.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
