Los Alamos National Laboratory Calibration and Inspection Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

You will lead user performed calibrations of CMMs and related equipment in support of quality engineering in Detonator Production Quality Engineering and Inspection, TA-22 (PAQ-3). You will contribute to inspection engineering activities and operations in support of quality engineering. This will include assisting in the completion of milestones on multiple projects and programmatic objectives related to inspection development and design as well as quality evidence capture.

R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 – $190,900)

In addition to the above duties, you will be expected to develop robust inspection processes; to develop Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixtures and programs to meet quality control standards and make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality. You may also be expected to apply knowledge of 3-D design and modeling capabilities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Calibration : Experience with performing calibration of CMMs.

Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with inspection (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

Inspection Development: Experience developing inspection processes including interpreting engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications and related data, specifying inspection equipment, characterizing process variables, and maintaining process performance.

Quality Standards: Working knowledge of quality assurance standards such as NQA-1, NAP 401.1 (formerly NAP-24) and DOE Order 414.D.

In addition to having advanced knowledge of the R&D Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D Engineer 3 must have the following:

Measurement and Testing Systems: Advanced technical knowledge and ability to provide technical leadership on measurement and testing systems (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 3: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

Manufacturing Experience: Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with manufacturing. Industrial manufacturing experience with high volume product output preferred.

Software: Working knowledge of various software packages such as Quindos, Calypso, or PC-DMIS; PTC CREO; or Solidworks.

Equipment: Demonstrated experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines.Hands-on experience repairing or assembling machine tools to accuracies of less than one micron.

Metrology Knowledge: Demonstrated use of metrology and statistical methods to help diagnose and correct improper quality control practices.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
