This position will be filled at either the Scientist 5 /Scientist 6 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Scientist 5 $162,900 - $291,400
The Theoretical Division (T) and the National Security Education Center (NSEC) are searching for a Director for the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS). The Center identifies and studies complex nonlinear phenomena arising in both basic and applied research, coordinates the study of these problems into interdisciplinary themes, and fosters research collaborations among researchers. The CNLS provides a link for effective interactions with academic and industrial centers of excellence in nonlinear research. The CNLS hosts numerous visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students, organizes lectures, workshops and conferences on topics of current scientific interest. The Center conducts an interdisciplinary research program in the theoretical physical, biological and mathematical sciences, with strong ties to both experimental and computational activities. Organizationally, the Center resides in the Theoretical Division within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Simulation and Computation (ALDSC).
The Center Director provides scientific leadership and line management of the CNLS while fostering collaborations with scientists throughout the Laboratory. The CNLS Center Director is expected to develop and lead a program to target and create cooperative long-term research programs consistent with the Laboratory’s strategic research objectives, to develop a strong working relationship with the CNLS External Advisory Committee, and to maintain effective working relationships throughout all levels of the Laboratory, government entities, academia and industry. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program while providing technical vision to nurture and support existing programs of others at the Center. The Center Director should be energetic, results-oriented, a catalyst for change and an outstanding relationship builder. Line management responsibilities include accountability for quality research, management of financial and human resources, proactive support of Laboratory and Division safety, security, environment and diversity objectives, the communications/marketing strategy for the Center and collaboration with the Theoretical Division to help provide strategic direction for the organization.
Scientist 6 $183,900 - $368,000
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the ability to chair international advisory and/or policy boards. Sought out for peer review by other recognized authorities and may lead peer review committees at an international level.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated record of scientific accomplishment in one or more areas relevant to the Center as evidenced by an outstanding publication portfolio and/or a demonstrable national or international reputation.
Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining research collaborations, from the identification of new potential topics to forming teams, promoting proposals, and executing projects.
Experience and accomplishments in strategic and tactical planning and in collaborative execution of the plans.
Ability to balance competing interests with available resources and establish clear priorities and focus.
Demonstrated record of effective management and leadership in the following areas: financial management, facilities and operational management (safety, security, environment), and personnel management.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including uncompromising honesty and integrity; and ability to earn the respect of subordinates, supervisors, peers, and customers.
Record of effective two-way written and oral communications skills, as evidenced by internal and external interactions, including briefings, presentations, publications, and meetings.

The ability to set and/or approve technical approaches for obtaining solutions to international technology challenges of ultimate importance. Proposes and influences strategic business investment plans that directly impact the future of the Laboratory.
Education/Experience at lower level : Ph.D. degree in a scientific or engineering field relevant to the Center’s activities and research or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at higher level : Ph.D. degree in a scientific or engineering field relevant to the Center’s activities and research and 5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Research experience with DOE/NNSA laboratories and US Universities.
Knowledge of national and international programs of relevance to the Center’s activities.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
