What You Will Do
Focus areas are: (1) synthesis of novel lanthanide complexes as catalysts for bioenergy applications, (2) tailored ligand development for tuning electronic structure, bonding and chemistry of actinide complexes, and (3) organic synthesis (with stable isotopes) for the biomedical arena.
The Postdoctoral Associate candidate will be responsible for conducting independent research and engaging in a broad set of activities across several scientific disciplines. Projects will support research and development specifically related to synthetic chemistry, ligand development, and spectroscopy. The successful candidate will apply scientific principles and methods to solve complicated technical problems; develop novel techniques or principles; and analyze data (raw experimental data with data reduction for publications). The position will require direct interface with colleagues, customers and sponsors, the preparation of proposals and reports, which also includes delivery of program/progress updates. B11/C-IIAC anticipates several postdoctoral opportunities for chemists, in one or more of the following areas:
Synthetic approaches to new materials, including nano-materials;
Synthesis of novel lanthanide complexes as catalysts for bioenergy applications;
Ligand development for tuning electronic structure, bonding and chemistry of actinide complexes;
Synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of homogeneous catalysts;
Synthesis of materials for sensor applications (radiation or chemical/biological agent detection);
Organic synthesis using chalcogenide-based methods;
Multinuclear NMR and MS spectroscopy;
Proven strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and the cover letter are required.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Required Skills: The successful candidate will have 1) self-motivation with a desire to be a technical leader; 2) A demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publication and presentation records and letters of reference; 3) An ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goals; 4) Effective verbal and written communication skills; 5) An ability to work efficiently under pressure in a rapidly changing environment; 6) Excellent organizational skills; 7) Experience in applying fundamental scientific and/or engineering concepts to complex, multidisciplinary problems; 8) A Ph.D. completed within the last 5 years in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field.
Candidates are eligible to be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. and the Postdoc Program Office submission deadlines corresponding to the quarterly meeting being proposed, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
A broad background and interest in interdisciplinary science. Ability to apply fundamental concepts and techniques developed in one discipline to a variety of (and perhaps incompletely defined) problems traditionally associated with other disciplines.
A Ph.D. completed in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field.
