What You Will Do

The Office of Chief Information Officer (OCIO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking candidates to perform as the Chief of Staff (COS). The COS will function as a key member of the management team. The selected candidate will to plan, coordinate, and direct the administrative and technical management of business, operational, and/or programmatic activities typically requiring broad information technology (IT) and cyber experience and the use of professional concepts to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Responsivities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as a key advisor to the OCIO office on business, operational, and/or technical programmatic activities and initiative contributing to the strategic development and the tactical planning to achieve cultural change within the IT organizations; and researching, developing, and implementing systems, processes, policies, and procedures to ensure business, operational, and/or programmatic consistency, efficiency, and compliance.

  • Establish the framework for the day-to-day business, operational, and/or programmatic activities.

  • Develop and implement communication strategies inter-divisional, cross organizationally and external to the Laboratory, including continuous monitoring of IT and cyber metrics.

  • Maintains and share current knowledge of Laboratory, DOE, and/or NNSA missions, policies, practices, and critical issues to ensure effective networking, reference, consistency, and compliance.

  • Act on behalf of and/or represent OCIO on activities and committees and serves as a liaison in responding to institutional requests.

  • Direct the administration and implementation of division wide staffing strategies and plans.

  • Build an IT and cyber certification plan for professionals and technologist under the purview of the OCIO.

  • Understand and adheres to all Laboratory and NNSA regulatory guidance and governance specific to business operations policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all results, materials, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of IT and cyber concepts, operations, and policy.

  • Advanced knowledge of and successfully demonstrated experience with administrative management of business, operational, and/or programmatic activities related to areas of:

  • Safety

  • Security

  • Employee development and mentoring

  • Environmental compliance

  • Contractor assurance

  • Quality assurance

  • Strategic and tactical planning

  • Financial management

  • Human resources

  • Communication strategies

  • Space and equipment planning and management.

  • Advanced knowledge of and successfully demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and managing innovation and process improvements, with respect to information technology, cyber and day to day activities.

  • Ability to function as a member of an executive management team, to work effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel, and to gain consensus, build teams, and resolve conflicts.

  • Excellent customer service skills and exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Knowledge of Human Performance Improvement (HPI) and Emotional Intelligence.

Desired Skills:

  • Supervisory or line management experience in the area of information technology or cyber security.

  • Certifications and/or degrees related to information technology or cyber security.

  • Demonstrated experience working with the security requirements of performing work in a sensitive and/or classified environment.

  • Active Q clearance

Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is preferred.
