What You Will Do

The Office of Seismic Hazards and Risk Mitigation (OSHRM) is a team that is focused on earthquake engineering and risk management for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We are part of the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group within the Engineering Technology and Design (E) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience evaluating the static and dynamic, linear and nonlinear response of structures, systems and components constructed from reinforced concrete and steel

  • Familiarity with preparing design documentation (drawings, specifications, calculations and reports) for reinforced concrete and steel structures

  • Familiarity with finite element analysis tools (e.g. SAP2000, GTSTRUDL, ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-DYNA)

  • Familiarity with commercial building codes and standards (e.g. IBC, ASCE-7, ACI 318, AISC 360)

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to work with coworkers with different technical backgrounds

  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables

  • Ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with nuclear facility codes and standards (e.g. DOE-STD-1020, ASCE-4, ASCE-43, ANSI/ANS-2.26, ANSI/ANS-2.29, ACI 349, AISC N690)

  • Experience with programming languages such as Fortran, C++, Python, Tcl

  • Experience with mathematical computation programs such as Matlab or Mathcad

  • Experience with probabilistic analysis/design methodologies

  • Experience in performing soil-structure interaction analysis

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision, distance vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to3000 htz), sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, typing or keyboarding.

Education:

  • Minimum BS degree in civil/structural engineering (or related field) from and ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 5 years or more of relevant professional experience, or

  • MS degree in civil/structural engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 2 years of relevant professional experience , or

  • PhD in civil/structural engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.
