This position will be filled at either the Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) position within the Engineering Services Division (ESD) is assigned to the Facility System Engineering & Management (ES-FE) Group responsible for plant engineering services and the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program implementation at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The positions are in nuclear or non-nuclear facilities across 26 miles of the Laboratory. The program elements including processes, standards, training, and qualification are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements, needs, and expectations in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
Cognizant System Engineer 3 $91,800 - $110,400
Position requires a skilled professional who is fully competent in all design engineering or system engineering.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently perform root cause analysis and engineered equivalency analysis in the areas of electrical, instrumentation and control, mechanical, structural/civil, or fire protection.
Cognizant System Engineer 4 $110,400 - $186,300
Position typically requires a seasoned, experienced professional who has the ability to lead and build CSE capability around Vital Safety Systems Assessments (VSSA) and System Health Reporting (SHR). In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be an expert within Facility Engineering and Engineering Services management and serve as a key advisor to deployed engineers.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in design engineering or system engineering: calculations, work planning, control methods, industry codes/standards, maintenance techniques, construction methodologies, technical baseline maintenance, troubleshooting operations-based engineering problems, as well as the demonstrated ability to provide solutions for a wide range of complex problems in a nuclear or industrial facility operation.
Demonstrated ability working collaboratively, including participating in the implementation and commissioning of new techniques and unconventional methods related to system engineering and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet tight schedules and accomplish project goals while effectively networking with peers across an organization, business unit, and/or institution.
Tools and Systems
Advanced knowledge of and experience providing solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex problems through the application of technology aided engineering tools such as CAD, CNC, CAE, etc. Proven ability to program and develop unique software analysis tools to resolve complex issues.
Demonstrated knowledge of safety issues or potential hazards relating to nuclear or industrial facility operation systems and devices and the use of design features to mitigate risks and hazards, including the demonstrated ability to define deliverable and/or lead projects related to safety.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership.
Additional Job Requirements for Cognizant System Engineer 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Extensive knowledge and experience as a senior technical advisor overseeing and assessing Vital Safety Systems, the conduct of maintenance engineering implementation, the identification of nuclear and high-hazard facility system aging and degradation. Demonstrated experience working with industry, regulatory and complex codes, standards, and criteria pertain to System Engineering and Vital Safety Systems such as DOE O 420.1 B, DOE STD-1073, and proven ability to build capability for CSEs in performing Vital Safety System assessments and preparing System Health Reports.
Advanced knowledge of and experience contributing as a leader in systems engineering, through the proven ability to integrate and coordinate multi-facility deployed, cross-functional technical work activities. Experience in leadership as demonstrated through the proven ability to develop reports and deliverables for senior management through Performance Based Indicators and lead projects while enhancing the technical and professional skills of junior engineers through active mentoring and training.
Education/Experience at Cognizant System Engineer 3: Requires a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program, and minimum of 8 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at Cognizant System Engineer 4: Requires a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited University/College and 10 years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, safety basis interaction, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE non-reactor nuclear and high hazard facilities.
An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
