What You Will Do
Help execute communications strategies at one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions. Join the Communications Arts and Services group (CEA-CAS), which provides full-service communications support for organizations and programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). CAS furthers the Lab’s mission by delivering strategic communications designed to inform, engage, and inspire both internal and external audiences.
You will be embedded with LANL’s Chemistry Division, a 300+ person organization with five technical groups that perform research and development in topics ranging from radioisotopes to treat cancer to nuclear forensics, energy alternatives, defense, and much more. We are looking for a motivated and well-rounded individual with a background in writing and technical communication to help us highlight our cutting-edge science and wonderful staff. You will work under the supervision of a senior communicator to develop content for and maintain the Division’s internal and external web pages, develop and produce brochures, help staff create and print posters for technical presentations, write science highlights, and help with a variety of other general communication activities.

Minimum Job Requirements:
The defining characteristics of this position are versatility and independence. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to create solutions for a range of communication needs, and be able to do so with minimal oversight. Working with busy group managers and scientists to develop high-quality content requires tact, persistence, and proven attention to detail.
You will have thorough knowledge of English grammar and rhetoric, technical editing, and writing.
You are expected to have demonstrated ability to write audience-targeted materials, both in print and online.
You should demonstrate the capacity for understanding and interpreting technical, scientific concepts and editing content of a technical nature.
In this role, you will need excellent written and oral communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
You will have the ability to remain courteous and professional under pressure.
You should demonstrate the capacity to collaborate with customers and project teams (peers) to plan, develop, and produce varied communication products.
You will need demonstrated experience with customer service in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. This includes producing quality communication products under tight deadlines.
You will show an ability for process/performance improvement based on customer and manager feedback.
Tools and Systems
In this role, you will use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint extensively and are expected serve as a resource on how to use these tools.
You will need to have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.
Education/Experience: This position requires two years of related experience. Preference may be given for a bachelor's or master's degree in English, journalism, technical communication, physical/social science, or a related field.
Familiarity with the Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro) and Microsoft SharePoint
Technical Knowledge cont.
Basic knowledge of principles, theories, and techniques of science communication and of document design for print and electronic/online publications. Demonstrated experience in illustration and/or design, and document layout will be considered favorably
Some background in science, particularly chemistry, will be helpful

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
