Los Alamos National Laboratory Communications Specialist (Post Bachelor's Student) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Help execute communications strategies at one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions. Join the Communications Arts and Services group (CEA-CAS), which provides full-service communications support for organizations and programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Our staff further the Lab’s mission by delivering strategic communications designed to inform, engage, and inspire both internal and external audiences.
You will be embedded with the Physical Sciences Directorate, working with researchers and communication professionals across the Laboratory to disseminate scientific and operational news and plans. Your work will be featured in a range of high-impact, high-visibility communication products – including magazines, newsletters, web sites, and presentations.
You will edit existing material and create original content based on background research and interviews with subject matter experts. The successful candidate will be a go-getter and problem-solver, capable of coming up to speed quickly and delivering top-level customer service in a fast-paced environment .
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
You will have thorough knowledge of English grammar and rhetoric, with experience writing and editing news and feature stories.
You should demonstrate the ability to interpret and translate complex information so it can be understood by the target audience, drawing on existing content and interviews with subject matter experts.
You are expected to have demonstrated experience meeting strict deadlines with simultaneous attention to quality and detail.
In this role, you will need excellent written and oral communication skills, problem-solving skills, and customer service and interpersonal skills. You will have the ability to remain courteous and professional under pressure.
You will be expected to work on communication products involving multiple authors and reviewers.
You will need demonstrated experience with customer service in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. You will show an ability to work effectively under pressure and balance multiple tasks of varying lengths and priorities both independently and as a member of a team.
You will show an ability for process/performance improvement based on customer and manager feedback.
Tools and Systems
In this role, you will need proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. You will have the ability to use and develop templates and demonstrate proficiency in using Word styles for formatting.
You will need to have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.
Education/Experience : Eligibility limited to students who have completed a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field within the past 3 years, but have not been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.
Basic skills using InDesign and/or other publication layout software, and Microsoft Excel
Customer service experience in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Background or interest in the physical sciences

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
