What You Will Do
The Computational Physics: Verification & Analysis group (XCP-8) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking highly motivated post-doctoral candidates in the areas of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) and machine learning. A successful candidate will develop advanced validation and uncertainty quantification methodology for relevant physics modeling capabilities using advanced statistical methods, including Bayesian optimization, machine learning, and multi-fidelity modeling. A background in a relevant field of physics is preferred (e.g. fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, solid mechanics, material strength and damage, equation of state, reactive flow, high-energy-density physics, instabilities and/or turbulence, and radiation transport).A successful applicant will be expected to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences. This work is part of a larger project. A successful applicant will be expected to work well in a team environment.
XCP-8 is an interdisciplinary group which specializes in VVUQ of complex numerical codes coupled by diverse physics models (fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, solid mechanics, material strength and damage, equation of state, reactive flow, high-energy-density physics, instabilities and turbulence, and radiation transport). Research in XCP-8 is cross-cutting and interacts closely with code and physics model developers, experimentalists, and simulation end-users across a broad set of physics.XCP-8 offers an exciting, flexible, scientifically challenging work environment with many opportunities to collaborate with the broader LANL scientific community.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with numerical simulations, development of physics models, and evaluating the quality of the models and simulations based on the relevant physics.
Research-level familiarity in validation, uncertainty quantification, optimization, machine learning, or a closely related focus area.
Strong programming skills in Fortran, C++ and/or Python. Alternately experience programming in Matlab or R may be substituted or ML codes will be considered.
Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings, communicate research to an interdisciplinary audience and work on an interdisciplinary team
Excellent written and communication skills in English.
Education/Experience: PhD in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, statistics, machine learning or a closely related discipline. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of PhD at time of being proposed for review by the committee, or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of the appointment.
Experience working with both numerical modeling and experimentation.
Experience with advanced statistical and uncertainty quantification methods, such as Bayesian optimization and/or multi-fidelity modeling.
Experience with high-energy-density physics, equations-of-state, material strength under high strain rates, and/or radiation transport models.
Familiarity with Machine Learning packages such as TensorFlow and Scikit-learn
Proficient with software engineering tools like: version control systems; web-based software repository systems; issue trackers; online collaboration platforms; and continuous integration systems
Familiarity with using High Performance Computing clusters
Active or ability to acquire a Q clearance.(Non-US citizens are eligible for this position.)
