What You Will Do

This position will be part of the NIE-CDS Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Team responsible for testing applications, clients, agents and other software in a heterogeneous computing environment. The candidate will perform conventional testing of commercial and LANL-developed software, including, but not limited to web browsers, browser plug-ins, anti-virus software/definitions, Adobe products, Entrust, Microsoft Office, scientific software, programming interactive development environments, compilers, STONIX, monthly Microsoft patches, puppet, platform-specific imaging solutions and any other software that may be widely used in the LANL computing environment.

Along with assuring software reliability and functionality, the candidate will also identify potential security risks and propose solutions for remediation if necessary. The candidate must be able to multi-task and be able to respond to shifting priorities on short notice. The tester must be able to perform repetitive software testing and ensure that software is adequately tested for deployment in LANL computer environments.

The following are the four main job duties:

Operating Systems

Testing for interoperability and functionality on LANL standardized computers. Verify a patch/update successfully applies. Verify new version or patch number. Verify reboot or no reboot needed. Test deployment through SCCM.

Non-ESD (Electronic Software Delivery) Applications

Verify installation and un-installation on LANL-standard computers and document installation instructions for users for use on self-service facilities. Verify single license key installation for enterprise environment. Check for product features, such as integration into social-media or cloud computing. Verify product does not open ports to “phone home.” Detect bugs and version incompatibility. Replicate problems discovered in field and resolve. Verify configurable preferences or if settings remain unchanged.

ESD Software

Test installation on LANL-standard computers and document installation instructions for users on ESD web page. In addition to the required tasks for non-ESD applications, test new installations vs. upgrade scenarios and against Information Architecture standard and LANL-developed software for interoperability.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated innovative problem solving in a heterogeneous computing environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently analyzing problems, proposing, implementing and documenting solutions

  • Experience working with Windows, Mac, and Linux systems in an enterprise environment

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff on issues of host based security.

  • Effective troubleshooting skills

  • Demonstrated experience working with Virtualization

  • Ability to work in unclassified and classified environments

  • Ability to ensure that test platforms are kept up-to-date with patches and vulnerability remediation

Desired Skills:

  • Hands-on experience in NIE supported configuration management services/platforms [MS SCCM, Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), Electronic Software Distribution (ESD), Windows 10 Deployment (DDS), Apple Update Service (ASUS), Casper, Red Hat (RHNSS), STONIX, STOW/GPO, Mac, Windows, etc.]

  • Experience administering servers, maintaining the team’s Active Directory Organizational Unit structure, and implementing test lab configurations in a cross-platform environment

  • Experience with testing automation and light scripting knowledge

Education: Position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
