What You Will Do

Experience Information Technology (XIT) is seeking an energetic and customer-focused mid-level to high level UNIX/Linux System Administrator for the XIT Unclassified Systems Services (XIT-USS) group. XIT-USS consists of approximately 68 professionals, technicians, contractors and students. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day technical workstation and server support for LANL customers, create solutions to support issues through remote desktop and on-site support of Linux workstations, as well as specifying, planning and implementing projects and computing services. The successful candidate will work on a team supporting customers within the LANL nuclear weapons physics groups in various locations around the laboratory.

The successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of remote and field level UNIX desktop administration and some server administration, including but not limited to:

  • Supporting UNIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux desktop workstations on the unclassified network.

  • Installing, configuring and troubleshooting Red Hat Linux desktops, mobile systems, workstations, and network issues in a heterogeneous environment.

  • Planning, designing, documenting and implementing Linux/UNIX solutions to support customer workstation requirements.

  • Resolving customer support issues and fulfilling requests through remote desktop and on-site field support.

  • Automating tasks using programming and scripting.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving network issues including file shares and authentication.

  • Communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Mentoring and training fellow team members in basic and advanced Linux system administration.

  • Practicing Information Architecture processes and standards.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux and/or UNIX system administration including desktop management.

  • Knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles.

  • Experience solving software and hardware issues in a heterogeneous computing environment.

  • Knowledge of system security measures including encryption and network hardening techniques.

  • Knowledge and experience in project management.

  • Ability to review, understand, and document end-to-end work processes.

  • Ability to work extended hours and/or extended work weeks when needed

Education/Experience: This position requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced vendor certification (RHCSA, RHCE).

  • Experience in Windows and/or Macintosh desktop administration.

  • Knowledge of Web-based technologies including Web page development and maintenance and Web-based tools and utilities.

  • Advanced vendor certification (RHCSA, RHCE).
