What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Computing Systems Professional (CSP) 3 ($87,800 - $144,800)

As a part of the Network Services Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory, you will provide first class support to over ten thousand employees, students and contractors. Through your efforts, the general public will benefit from your skill and attention to detail. You'll bring your particular strengths and a reliable engineer perspective to a range of challenges that could include the following:

  • Designing and developing a new service or customer interface.

  • Provisioning and configuring the servers and applications behind institutional services.

  • Adding new monitoring and measuring key metrics to better understand a process.

  • Working with various support teams to provide timely solutions for end-user problems.

  • Improving automation and analyzing workflows.

  • Designing, specifying, and developing solutions for complex heterogeneous computing infrastructure.

Computing Systems Professional (CSP) 4 ($96,600 - $161,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the CSP 4 duties include:

  • Participating in activities that demonstrate a subject matter expertise in the area of Linux systems administration and programming.

  • Performing research and development to identify and implement applicable emerging technologies in the Laboratory computing environment.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computing Systems Professional 3:

  • Proficiency in provisioning, administering and using modern Unix/Linux operating systems.

  • Strong knowledge of shell scripting and at least one programming language, preferably Python.

  • Practical knowledge of TCP/IP networking and troubleshooting connectivity issues.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including documentation for peers and end-users.

Additional Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 4:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Computing Systems Professional 4 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in a production environment supporting enterprise wide essential services like DNS, DHCP, IP address management, LDAP, authentication, firewalls, file transfer, network access control and proxies.

  • Demonstrated experience in a production environment supporting essential services and 100+ servers.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems in creative and effective ways.

  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership to colleagues and customers.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated commitment to centralized configuration management and automation, preferably with Puppet.

  • Experience supporting high availability solutions such as load balancing, clustering, or fail-over mechanisms.

  • Database, web server, web applications design and administration experience, including Apache, MySQL, Postgres, Sybase, PHP.

  • Experience using Juniper, Pulse Secure, NetApp, Infoblox and other proprietary operating systems and devices.

  • Solid understanding of network protocols and ability to use diagnostic tools appropriately.

  • Red Hat training or certification.

Education:

  • Computing Systems Professional 3: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

  • Computing Systems Professional 4: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of twelve years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, advanced vendor and/or professional certifications are highly desirable and post graduate course work may be expected.
