Los Alamos National Laboratory Condensed Matter Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, has an opportunity for a Postdoc available in their Materials Physics and Applications Division, Magnet Lab group.

We are searching for a postdoc to work on topological and/or strongly correlated electronic materials under high magnetic fields of up to 100 tesla. Areas of interest include unconventional superconductivity, topology, 2D materials, and the electronic structure and magnetic properties of actinide compounds. The successful candidate is expected to focus their effort on one or more of these topics and the development of high magnetic field science and measurement techniques. The position also provides opportunities for industrious candidates to pursue new collaborations, develop complementary techniques. and perform independent research within condensed matter physics.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Requirements include a Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics or related field completed within the past 5 years.

Experience in one or more of the followingareas:

  • condensedmatterphysicsexperimental techniques (electrical/thermaltransport, susceptibility, specific heat), sample characterization (x-ray crystallography, PPMS and MPMS measurements) and sample preparation (sample cutting, polishing, contacts, manipulation of small samples, focused ion beam lithography)

  • ‐measurementsinverystrongmagneticfields(>30T)ofshortduration(dB/dt>100T/s)

  • ­‐uniaxial and hydrostaticpressuremeasurementsutilizingdiamondanvilcells or strain cells

Desired Qualifications:

Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential, as evinced by publications, presentations, cover letter, and references. Familiarity with using Matlab/Mathematica/Labview etc . for data analysis, calculations, and modeling is desired.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
