Los Alamos National Laboratory Controls Programmer (R&D Engineer 2 or 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Engineering Operations and Physics (J-6) Group is looking for a Controls Programmer to provide accelerator control system software and hardware support for the DARHT accelerators, Axis I and Axis II. J-6 provides state-of-the-artcapabilities to support the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL’s) hydrodynamic test mission. J-6’s core responsibilities includes physics, diagnostics and data acquisition, controls, timing, pulsed power, mechanical, and operations necessary to the accelerators of the DARHT facility. Additionally, J-6 personnel execute R&D efforts in support of accelerator capability development.

The Controls Programmer position will be filled as a R&D Engineer level 2 or 3, depending on the skills and level of experience of the selected candidate.

R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700)

As a Controls Programmer at the R&D Engineer level 2, the selected candidate will support, troubleshoot, and maintain the dual-axis electron beam accelerator’s PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, industrial communication protocols, and SCADA-based controls system. Participate in the diagnosis of failures or malfunctions that occur in the hardware or software sections of the control system. Take part in troubleshooting, repairing, or replacing equipment or systems using specialized equipment, detailed drawings, diagrams, sketches, manuals, and verbal and/or written instructions. Participate in documenting existing and future control hardware/software systems and components. This includes preparing required documents and working with computer-aided drafters. Coordinate equipment and systems shutdowns, upgrades, or installations, including documenting all changes. Participate in the design, construction, installation, testing, documentation, and operation of hardware/software control system test stands. Develop and maintain control system programming and databases including VBA, Access, and Microsoft SQL Server. Adhere to the principles of Formality of Operations including Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Engineering, and Conduct of Training.

R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100-$190,900)

As an R&D Engineer 3, the selected candidate will perform all the duties of an R&D Engineer 2. In addition, the candidate will lead research, design, test, analysis, verification, and validation of controls engineering technology solutions for the accelerators. Lead troubleshooting and upgrade activities of control systems relevant to the accelerators. Design, write, and debug existing codes for accelerator operations and analysis under the Microsoft. NET programming model using C# and Microsoft SQL Server as well as other compatible programming systems.

Control Systems

Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with control systems hardware and software, PLC, SCADA, HMI, Modbus-TCP, and Ethernet networks, digital and analog I/O, power supplies, electronic equipment, and system automation.


Extensive programming experience with high-level languages, PLC languages, database languages, and control system software in a Microsoft Windows environment.


Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in requirements collections, analysis, and documentation of systems.


Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers. Experience with collaboration across organizational boundaries and the ability to manage these relationships in a positive manner.

In addition to the R&D Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D Engineer 3 must have the following:


Demonstrated experience leading research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of controls engineering technology solutions including extensive experience independently troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems.


Demonstrated ability to exhibit critical thinking and advanced problem solving skills to discover innovative solutions to both commonplace and complex control system issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • VBA, Visual basic, C#, and MSSQL programming experience.

  • Unity Pro, ClearSCADA, Wonderware-InTouch,i Fix and LabVIEW controls software experience.

  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining large-scale control systems including advanced troubleshooting skills related to electrical circuits using electronic testing and measurement instruments.

  • Ability to interpret electronic component datasheets and schematic drawings as well as demonstrated experience in design and troubleshooting of electronic circuits.

  • Experience designing, troubleshooting, and maintaining closed loop servo and/or stepper motors including PLC and PC based motion control systems.

  • Experience developing control systems for an accelerator or nuclear facility, to include working on controls for magnet, pulse power, and vacuum systems.

  • Sound knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Experience working under formal conduct of operations, in a large-scale, complex processor facility such as a charged-particle accelerator, nuclear reactor, chemical reactor, or actinide operations.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills to include overseeing the design, planning, development, and testing of prototype and operational control systems as well as the ability to contribute to the organizational and team knowledge level by mentoring others.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
