Los Alamos National Laboratory Controls Software Scientist (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division - Instrumentation and Controls group (AOT-IC) is seeking a Controls Software Scientist - LabVIEW Developer/Architect for the Controls Software team.

As a Controls Software Scientist - LabVIEW Developer/Architect the selected candidate will work primarily on the design and development of instrumentation and control systems for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) flash X-ray radiography capability at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the Advanced Sources and Detectors Project (ASD). The radiography capability is a multi-pulse linear induction accelerator called Scorpius and is expected to be commissioned at the NNSS’s U1a Complex by 2024. This is a national project led by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), as well as academic and industrial partners. The LANL ASD Technical Development office (ASD-TECH) is responsible for coordinating and executing these activities.

After the successful completion of the project activities, the successful applicant will transition to work as a member of the Controls Software Team whose primary responsibility is to support the operation of the control and data acquisition systems deployed at the LANSCE facility. The applicant will need to employ or develop knowledge and skills about control-system operational and maintenance support, which will require interacting with controls engineers, physicists, operators, instrumentation and controls technicians, and others.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, test, debug, deploy, and maintain LabVIEW code for control system software to include writing and troubleshooting custom drivers to control various non-NI equipment using Ethernet, as well as RS485/RS232 communications.

  • Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD)/Certified LabVIEW Embedded Developer (CLED)/ Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) or equivalent 5 years of experience developing LabVIEW Real-Time, LabVIEW FPGA, and NI CompactRIO code.

  • Knowledge of C programming language or equivalent compiled text-based language.

  • Demonstrated experience working on medium- or large-scale projects and as a member of a team as well as working independently.

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.

  • Full-time on-site support at LANL, some travel will be required.

  • Ability to obtain a Department of Energy Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.

Training/Certifications: Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD)/Certified LabVIEW Embedded Developer (CLED)/ Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) or equivalent 5 years of experience developing LabVIEW Real-Time, LabVIEW FPGA, and NI CompactRIO code.

Education: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical or controls engineering, physics or physical science, or related fields plus 4 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS), which will be used for data acquisition and archival on Scorpius.

  • Knowledge of Linux shell scripting and programming such as bash, python, or perl.

  • Experience programming control systems for Accelerator beamlines, and with beam transport systems and diagnostics in particular.

  • Experience developing applications to configure and collect data from high-speed digitizers.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
