What You Will Do
The selected candidate will be a member of the Network & Infrastructure Engineering – Engineering & Security Services (NIE-ESS) group working with the Security Applications Team. This team is responsible for managing various commercial off the shelf (COTS) and in-house developed security applications for the laboratory.
The successful candidate will be supporting the Terminus application, an in-house developed enterprise solution that tracks and documents systems on the network, performs vulnerability scans on hosts, and blocks hosts from the network based on a complex set of compliance and vulnerability checks. The successful candidate will be expected to understand the Terminus application and help maintain the overall health of the application and infrastructure. They will also be expected to provide exemplary customer service to multiple users such as system owners, senior level management, and Incident Response team members.
Operational activities of LANL’s vulnerability scanning solution.
Troubleshooting issues with network vulnerability scanning and assessment tools.
Troubleshooting issues with host discovery tools.
Providing 3rd tier technical support.
Troubleshooting vulnerability false positives.
Aggregation and reporting of security metrics to laboratory management.
Responding to Federal and local data calls
Assisting compliance personnel with security audits.
Preparing and delivering security presentations to technical personnel and senior level management.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Advanced understanding of TCP/IP networking, common networking ports and protocols, traffic flow, system administration, OSI model, defense-in-depth and common security elements.
Demonstrated advanced experience as a system administrator for Windows, Linux, and/or Mac operating systems.
Experience with object oriented programming.
Demonstrated advanced experience with vulnerability assessment tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare documentation and presentations for other technical teams and senior level management.
Education/Experience: This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 8 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, postgraduate work may be expected.
Demonstrated advanced experience with web vulnerability scanning.
Demonstrated advanced experience with network security.
Experience with normalizing databases.
Experience writing and debugging Python scripts.
Experience identifying and remediating vulnerabilities on systems.
Experience participating in Red team exercises and security audits.
Experience with data analysis and business intelligence (BI) tools.
Note to Applicants: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion.Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
