What You Will Do
Cyber and Systems Architecture, the Division that supports the Chief Information Officer, orchestrates the information security and technology environment across the Laboratory through strategic planning, cybersecurity advisory support, governance, policy development, risk management, and efficient, effective portfolio management. The Chief Information Security Officer is looking for a Data Analyst – Cybersecurity Technical Staff member. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with an inquisitive, analytical mind that constantly looks for solutions to difficult problems. They must have the ability to perform data analytics, identify trends, and translate findings into recommendations and solutions. Additionally, tact in conveying complicated technology and analytical concepts to stakeholders at multiple levels and technical knowledge and/or experience in cyber security is ideal.
As a Data Analyst – Cybersecurity Technical Staff member in Cyber and Systems Architecture - you will perform a range of duties to help ensure cybersecurity for the Laboratory by developing data products and analysis to help laboratory staff and senior management make data informed decisions. You will extract insights from complex cyber and information technology data sets for product development, evaluation, and deployment for ensuring safe and secure IT operations. Additionally, you will help identify strategic opportunities to reduce the Laboratory's risk. You may be expected to contribute to creating intelligence or operational products and perform cyber analysis. You will be expected to collaborate with other cyber security and information technology experts at the Laboratory, mission stakeholders, and others throughout the Department of Energy complex. As a result, good communication, diplomacy and interpersonal skills are required.
Specific job responsibilities include:
Develops and implements metrics, analyzes data for new and unusual features, manipulates raw data when needed to gather information, and provides guidance to key cyber security stakeholders to be used for resolving cyber issues.
Working knowledge of and evaluation of advanced data analytic tools (such as Tableau), techniques, risk analysis approaches, and researches exploitation methods and techniques – proposing effective solutions to cyber security issues.
Contributes to establishing and automating the implementation, configuration and maintenance of NIST related standards and controls for networks and systems.
Develops presentations, technical reports and briefings on complex cyber security issues to convey risks, impacts and recommendations for security controls to senior management and stakeholders.
Contributes to establishing direction and milestones for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at a task level within the approved scope, schedule and budget.
Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry best practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting cyber security policies or programs.
Acts as a trusted advisor across functions and organizations and helps maintain Cyber and Systems Architecture as an ethically and legally pristine organization. Displays the strength to stand by difficult, but sound decisions, while helping steer stakeholders towards outcomes that support mission and operations.
Understands and adheres to all Laboratory policies and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to cyber security.
Ensures all results, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience building statistical models, both predictive and descriptive.
Hands on knowledge of database manipulation through environments such as MySQL and NoSQL.
Understanding of how to programmatically extract tidy data through restful API’s with Python or R.
Experience in developing data visualization independently or with tools such as Tableau, MicroStrategy or Shiny.
Hands on knowledge of Splunk.
Demonstrated experience in creating information strategy for cross-platform analytics.
Demonstrated experience in data quality assurance and creation of cyber metrics to measure cyber security risk, operations performance and other key performance indicators systems.
Expert knowledge in creating actionable dashboards for executives, cyber security leaders and cyber security technical staff, including historic and predictive reporting.
Demonstrated experience in performing data mining and statistical analyses on large data sets to uncover critical patterns and predictive models.
Expertise in identifying data issues, and collaborating with engineers and developers to resolve data issues.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with aspects of current IT technology including software, networks, security tools, services and related protocols.

Experience managing data driven research from project inception to stakeholder communication.
Exposure to and programming knowledge of enterprise governance, risk and compliance tools such as RSA Archer.
Specific experience using data analytics platforms such as Amazon Web Services Data Analytics Products, or Cloudera.
Experience with Hadoop, Hive and MapReduce programing.
Knowledge of modeling software in R, Python or Spark.
Technical experience protecting classified information and sensitive unclassified information.
Understanding of Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and LANL computer and information security policies, practices, and procedures.
Experience with classified and unclassified government networks.
Active DOE Q clearance or Department of Defense (DoD) Top Security clearance.
Education: Position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a technical field and eight (8) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
