Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Division Leader (IT Manager 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join the management team of the Network and Infrastructure Engineering (NIE) Division of the Information & Technology (I&T) organization & Associate Level Directorate, Business Management (ALDBUS). NIE Division provides the technical communication and workplace infrastructure services for the "desktop to teraflops" cyber workplace for the Laboratory.

In addition, NIE provides the network, telecommunications, collaboration, cyber defenses, and virtual computing infrastructure for the Laboratory. The division is organized into five groups as follows:

  • Configuration and Development Services (NIE-CDS) - provides enterprise level configuration management, vulnerability patching and remediation, and system and software development needed for those services.

  • Infrastructure Services (NIE-IS) - responsible for providing institutional compute and storage, operating systems (OS) support for Laboratory business systems, institutional network services, and network engineering services in both classified and unclassified environments.

  • Engineering and Security Services (NIE-ESS) - responsible for the cybersecurity of the classified and unclassified institutional networks’ infrastructure, including compliance and assurance, incident response, and LANL’s network security architecture.

  • Core Services (NIE-CS) - provides production systems for the division. A primary responsibility of this group is managing infrastructure for LANL’s Enterprise information technology applications.

  • Telecommunication Services (NIE-TS) - provides telecommunication technologies and services enabling science, programs, and operations at LANL. The group provides the entire Lab with voice, wireless, data, and video communication services.


  • Assist in the development and execution of vision, strategic plans and goals for the division.

  • Organizational management, including budgeting, forecasting and financial management, capabilities and staff development, succession planning, personnel and salary management, and ensuring a safe and secure workplace.

  • Work closely with the I&T and ALDBUS leadership to ensure that the NIE strategy effectively integrates with other ALDBUS organizations in the delivery of IT services to customers.

Institutional Acumen

  • Understand the LANL mission and programmatic requirements in order to best serve the institution with the technology necessary to ensure successful execution.

  • Collaboration with Federal oversight, Office of the CIO, internal customers, stakeholders and ALDBUS peer organizations to achieve alignment between institutional priorities and allocation of resources.

Technical Competence

  • Advance formality of operations, and incident management and service request processes in support of a strategy for continual service improvement.

  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of the I&T Technical Roadmaps in support of ALDBUS & LANL missions.

  • Provide technical direction for I&T and ALDBUS service improvements; including advancing formality of operations and service request processes in support of a strategy for continual service improvement and the appropriate balance of productivity and compliance.

  • Develop and maintain operational metrics that measure the effectiveness of the division.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership competencies including the ability to define and measure optimal performance in a complex technical organization.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a large team/organization in all aspects of organizational management, capability and staff development, succession planning, personnel and salary management, performance management and ensuring a safe and secure workplace.

  • Demonstrated experience leading change in a technical organization; through strategic planning and tactical network operations management.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage several multidisciplinary project teams effecting enterprise networks and services simultaneously and successfully complete projects on schedule, within budget and scope.

  • Demonstrated experience in performing technical tasks in one or more of the five NIE main focus areas: Core Services; Configuration & Development; Engineering & Security Services; Infrastructure Services and/or Telecommunication Service.

  • Demonstrated experience with collaboration across organizational boundaries and the ability to manage customer relationships in a positive manner.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information SysEtems or related field from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience with cyber security related technologies and practices.

  • Demonstrated experience with audits.

  • Demonstrated experience working with LANL’s OCIO and Los Alamos Field Office.

  • Active Q clearance.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
