Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Division Leader (R&D Manager 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Engineering Technology and Design Division (E) develops and applies a diverse set of Research and Development (R&D) engineering capabilities to provide solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. E Division is a division consisting of 6 technical groups which employ approximately 200 engineers, scientists, professionals, and technicians. Capabilities include Mechanical and Thermal Engineering, Process Modeling and Analysis, Process Automation and Control, Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation, High Explosive Device Assembly, and Engineering Environmental Testing. Customers span the Laboratory and include Weapons Design and Production Agencies, Global Security, Science and Engineering Campaigns, as well as external government agencies and some commercial companies.
Reporting to the Division Leader, the Deputy Division Leader for E Division will serve as an active member of the Division leadership team. The successful candidate will support the day to day division operations which include:
Share responsibility for high level technical, programmatic, and operational leadership and management of E Division.
Maintain and develop the capabilities necessary to support programmatic mission success, including recruiting, mentoring, and retaining quality staff.
Provide oversight of hazardous operations and facilities and facilitate the execution of programmatic work with appropriate focus on safety, security and safeguards, environmental management and other core Laboratory business requirements.
Coordinate and manage budgets; schedule and prioritize investment processes that align mission with capabilities.
Work closely with the Division Leader and Staff Operations Manager for the strategic and tactical planning, budget planning, and work as an integral team member in the development of division capabilities.
Maintain and develop good working relationships with stakeholders inside and outside of the Laboratory.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated technical expertise and experience in a division mission focus area(s). Demonstrated project management experience.
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to assimilate, evaluate and communicate technical information.
Demonstrated leadership skills (vision, strategic thinking, creativity, innovation, institutional perspective, team building, decisiveness and integrity). Demonstrated personnel leadership and development skills (hiring, coaching, completing performance appraisals performing annual merit process and managing conflict), including a commitment to AA/EEO/Diversity objectives.
Safety & Security
Demonstrated commitment to Lab goals in the areas of security, safety, and compliance. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Strategy & Collaboration
Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with others at all levels, work cooperatively in a team environment and build consensus, and expeditiously and professionally resolve conflict. Experience building collaborative relationships across LANL, and/or with other national laboratories, universities, and the private sector.
Education: Minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering from an ABET accredited institution. Master’s degree or higher preferred.

Strong working knowledge of the breadth of E activities, facilities, and R&D portfolio.
