Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Group Leader (Occupational Med Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a member of the Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Division leadership team, you will work with OS&H management to provide healthcare management, leadership and operational and administrative support for the Occupational Health Group (OSH‐OH).

OSH-OH provides Occupational Medical support services to Los Alamos Laboratory employees and programs. The group is an innovative leader within the Department Of Energy Complex in promoting and maintaining a healthy, safe and productive workforce that focuses on the right work and the right processes to create the right laboratory.

As a Deputy Group Leader, you will report to the Group Leader and be responsible for driving operational excellence, acting as a change manager for the group, reporting operational metrics, managing projects, developing work packages, managing deliverables and assisting in budget management. You will help motivate group members to achieve and exceed group goals deliverables and will help foster a professional collaborative working environment.

In particular, this Deputy Group Leader position would be responsible for the direct management of medical and mental health care providers and supporting staff while ensuring that they are trained and qualified. This includes all aspects of personnel management, including but not limited to, managing headcount, forecasting and managing budgets associated with the group, directing assignments, employee hiring, on-boarding and performance management. Specific duties may also include, but are not limited to, developing and implementing policies and procedures for providing supervision and oversight while directing Occupational Health specialists and professionals and other assigned staff to ensure industrial hygiene and safety-related compliance, and managing subcontractor and vendor services.

This position would also provide counsel and assistance to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) management on matters dealing with the development, management, and implementation of Occupational Health programs and services, such as respiratory protection, beryllium, hearing conservation, lead, asbestos, the Human Reliability Program, Employee Assistance Program and Commercial Driver Medical Exams (CDME).

Demonstrated leadership and management experience collaborating, managing, interacting, and working effectively with personnel at all levels with emphasis on continual learning and improvement, team‐building, prioritizing, managing resources, and meeting organizational objectives and deadlines.

Strategic Planning

Demonstrated ability to develop strategic organizational goals and objectives and align tactical, operational decisions to ensure alignment and realization of overall strategic vision.

Performance Assurance

Demonstrated experience with the development and application of metrics, training and qualifications, and lessons learned to improve performance and reduce risks through modification of work practices and processes.


Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Management Skills

Demonstrated skill in management, supervision and human resources administration of assigned employees


Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree preferred) from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Program, Policy, Procedure Implementation

Significant experience managing mental and/or medical clinical programs, policies, and procedures in an Occupational Health related environment.

Knowledge and experience implementing Department of Energy‐based requirements, including 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
