What You Will Do_

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in the Laboratory’s core capability of Accelerators and Electrodynamics. The Accelerators and Electrodynamics group (AOT-AE) leverages the discipline of electrodynamics for the benefit of present and future LANL missions in national security, discovery science, and nuclear weapons. AOT-AE anticipates, innovates, and executes high-impact, breakthrough science and engineering as a core Laboratory capability. By leveraging competencies found only at LANL, we strengthen technical innovation within the Directorate and strive to be a worldwide leader in accelerator and electrodynamics technology.

The Deputy Group Leader will assist the Group Leader in technical leadership, strategic planning, program development, and streamlined administrative management of the group; including participating as a member of the AOT Division management team. Specifically, the Deputy Group Leader will, in collaboration with line management, provide administrative and technical leadership for the group's technical staff together with capability development and project oversight. The Deputy Group Leader will maintain a tight focus on the tactical functionality of the group office and may be tasked with representing the Group, Division and Laboratory at internal and external events such as project reviews, committee meetings, and similar functions, at the discretion and request of line management. In addition, the Deputy will be expected to make technical and/or project management contributions to projects where the group has design and implementation responsibilities with respect to the operation of the LANSCE accelerator. The DGL may also pursue partial funding to conduct research not related directly to operations, at the discretion of the AOT-AE group leader and AOT division director.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience and skills in setting priorities and assigning tasks, performance evaluation, mentoring of employees, coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.

  • 5+ years work experience at an accelerator or similar large scientific facility.

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead projects independently from inception to successful implementation.

  • A strong record of technical accomplishments and experience in one or more of the group's technical focus areas. These include electron and proton/ion accelerator design, fabrication, testing and characterization; electron or ion beam source design, including both cathodes and DC/RF structures; laser-based accelerators; high-power microwave systems; and modeling of electromagnetic phenomena in propagating, evanescent and resonator configurations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with all levels of management and staff while overseeing multiple projects as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and judgment, including strategic and tactical planning skills, strong fiscal management skills, and exceptional oral and written communication skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Operational experience at an accelerator-based user facility.

  • Familiarity with LANL safety and integrated work management policies and practices including developing integrated work management documents.

  • A record of success in program development, preparation of technical and budgetary proposals, and presentation of new ideas and proposals to existing and potential customers.

  • Current holder of Q or TS clearance.

  • Strong record of participation and engagement with the accelerator physics community.

Essential Job Functions: Gripping with hands, typing or keyboarding.

Education: Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering or a related field.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
