Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
As the Deputy Group Leader (DGL) of the Process Automation and Control (E-3) Group, the selected candidate will team with the E-3 Group Leader, the E-3 first line managers, E-3 staff and the E Division leadership team to provide engineering leadership and technical management for the group. The DGL will report to the Group Leader and serve on the E Division management team. The Deputy Group Leader will assist and supplement the Group Leader in ensuring effective program execution, sound fiscal stewardship, adherence to safety and security policies, program development, personnel development and other business administrative issues. As this is a 0.5 FTE position, the applicant will be expected to conduct funded (the remaining 0.5 FTE) research activities which are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.E-3 is responsible for providing design, fabrication, testing and installation of process automation and control systems for various customers across the Laboratory. This includes providing support for plutonium processing and sustainment. The E-3 group deploys resources providing engineering R & D solutions that enable the Lab's programmatic mission. E-3 includes personnel with capabilities in robotics, electrical-mechanical hardware and software design and engineering, electrical drafting, project management, systems development and integration. The group is comprised of engineers, scientists, development and fabrication technicians and technologists.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated success in leadership and/or management of a program, line organization or large engineering project.
Experience in recruiting, evaluating, mentoring and retaining talented undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs (including promoting diversity and fostering teamwork).
Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and promoting objectives in such areas as performance improvement and budget management.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the group’s mission areas (data acquisition systems, process automation and control systems, robotics). Effective interpersonal and communication skills, which include the ability to engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff, the ability to discuss program strategies with current and potential funding agencies, an ability to delegate tasks to staff and administrators and an ability to interact with all levels of Laboratory management.
Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives
Demonstrated experience in building collaborative partnerships across LANL internal organizations and demonstrated success in developing and sustaining engineering programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Programs, Global Security Programs, NNSA, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.
Safety & Security
Familiarity with LANL administrative, safety and security policies. Active DOE Q Clearance.
Process controls design, programming, or application experience. Advanced knowledge of one or more of the group’s mission areas (data acquisition systems, process automation and control systems, robotics), as demonstrated by technical development and implementation. Experience implementing formality into an engineering organization.
Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives
Familiarity with work/project execution in a nuclear facility environment.Experience in interactions between national laboratories, universities or private industry.
Education/Experience :Minimum requirement is a master’s degree in engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
