What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Services Division develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This Designer/Drafter position within the Engineering Services Division (ESD) is assigned to the Weapons Facilities Operations (ES-WFO) Group. As part of the Systems Engineering team within ES-WFO you will be responsible for facility and engineering. The positions are in nuclear or non-nuclear facilities across 26 miles of the Laboratory. The program elements including processes, standards, training, and qualification are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements, needs, and expectations in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
Design Drafter 2 ($48,600 - $74,700)
As a Designer Drafter 2, you will use your familiarity with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, IEEE and computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts or engineering concepts to support technical baseline. In some cases you may be required to generate minor design packages for components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems. You will also resolve engineering package issues by facilitating reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing.
You will work as part of the ES-WFO multidiscipline system engineering team in support of maintaining and upgrading Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) facilities by preparing quality Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings that are in compliance with LANL CAD Standards. You will interface with clients, other designers, and engineers to establish and maintain technical baseline documentation on assigned facilities/systems. At LANL, technical baseline documentation provides an accurate picture of our facilities and assets. This allows our Operations and Maintenance teams to effectively do their job in the field, and saves money the next time a facility modification is necessary. You will complete historical drawing research and integrating it into new baselines. You’ll have the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines and directly engage stakeholders for their feedback.
Some field work such as walk downs and data gathering of existing facilities, systems, structures and components is expected as part of this position. You should also be capable of developing minor design packages. In all aspects of the job duties you will promote leadership, quality, and safety values.
Design Drafter 3 ($58,000 - $90,800)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Design Drafter 3 will have the opportunity to be self-directed in determining technical objectives of assignments, which may be completed without established procedures. You may supervise work of others and will be expected to perform your own work with minimal direction. Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of expert results without appreciable direction. In addition, you should have the ability to mentor junior designer/drafter staff and grow their skillsets.
As a technical expert in drafting, you will help to define drawing standards optimizing CAD best practices for efficiency and achievability across the team. You will be expected to provide technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
Working level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals for application of symbols, notes, GD&T to drawings and models to capture design intent
Ability to grasp engineering, design, and drafting concept related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.
Fundamental understanding of:
ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.
Knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
Capable of reading and generating multiple discipline drawings to include P&IDs, PFDs, schematics, facility equipment, and floor plans. Due to the nature of System Engineering, configuration management, and technical baseline development candidate will need to have a diverse background in all engineering disciplines.
Work well in teams and with minimal guidance from a senior level technician on non-routine tasks.

Proficient use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
Intermediate understanding of:
ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.
Capable of independently establishing technical baseline standards. For example this may include defining level of detail for standardardized drawings.
Education/Experience at lower level :Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires an Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Knowledge of AutoCAD and AutoDesk Inventor
Knowledge of 3D Modeling Software such as Creo
Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and policies applicable to facility design, operations, and maintenance
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
