What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Designer, Drafter 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties for this position:

  • Work as part of the Engineering Services multidiscipline design team in support of maintaining and upgrading LANL’s facilities.

  • Prepare quality Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings that are in compliance with LANL CAD Standards.

  • Interface with clients, other designers, and engineers to aid in the development of creative cost effective solutions.

  • Interface and coordinate with other departments and customers during the design and construction activities.

  • Promote leadership, quality, and safety values in all aspects of job duties.

  • Participate in field walkdowns and data gathering of existing facilities, systems, structures and components.

Designer/Drafter 1 ($42,000 - $64,800)

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position:

  • Use Standard CAD equipment and generate simple drawings.

  • Collaborate with a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure drawing coordination and quality.

  • Develop CAD drawings and design models under the direction of a senior designer.

  • Produce work in accordance with budget and schedule constraints.

  • Anticipate job requirements and the initiative to act accordingly.

Designer/Drafter 2 ($46,400 - $71,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the primary duties of the Design Drafter 2 position include:

  • Work with rough sketches, notes, layouts or prototype assemblies to develop CAD drawings and design models under the direction of a senior designer.

  • Developing capacity to produce designs independently and with minimum engagement of the design engineers.

  • Creates complete drawing packages that follow the groups design/drafting standards.

  • Participate in design reviews.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated entry-level proficiency with CAD tool (Autodesk AutoCAD).

  • Ability to grasp engineering, design, and drafting concepts.

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and application of CAD Standards (National CAD Standards –NCS preferred).

  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and customers.

  • Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure drawing coordination and quality.

  • Develop CAD drawings and design models under the direction of a senior designer.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office products and CAD products.

Additional Job Requirements for Design Drafter 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Design Drafter 2 level requires:

  • Requires 3 to 5 years of drafting/design experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5.

  • Basic knowledge to create high-level, three-dimensional parametric CAD systems in designated discipline to generate drawings and design models.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit.

  • Basic knowledge of industry codes and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, etc.).

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and policies applicable to facility design, operations, and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of industry codes and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, etc.).

  • DOE Experience.

Education Required: Associates degree in Engineering Drafting and Design, or equivalent degree and combination education and experience.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
