Los Alamos National Laboratory Designer/Drafter 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will perform job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Applies fabrication, construction, operation, and maintenance requirements/experience relevant to fire protection discipline.

  • Works independently and as part of a team.

  • Uses computer-aided design (CAD) equipment to produce unique drawings/layouts of components, facilities and/or utility systems.

  • Generates complete design and/or as-built packages for complex components, facilities and/or systems.

  • Creates complete drawing packages that require minimal checking.

  • Uses industry codes, standards, and works with customer to develop specifications to prepare work plans, drawings and layouts.

  • Applies engineering design principles to design and fabricate components and assemblies.

  • Adheres to engineering policies, programs and practices.

  • Performs calculations in support of complex technical problems.

  • Works with minimal supervision, may supervise aspects of work and identifies process improvement activities.

  • Works with engineering team to ensure drawing quality.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques (4 years’ experience required), CAD modeling and design and high-level 3-D parametric CAD systems. Working knowledge of AutoCAD system 2014 or higher

  • Sound knowledge of complex mathematical formulas and computations such as hydraulic calculations, battery and voltage drop calculations.

  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Sound knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within fire protection discipline.

  • Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

  • Effective Communication skills

Desired Skills

  • Proficiency with AutoSPRINK.

  • Familiarity with SprinkCAD.

  • Proficient knowledge of fire protection systems highly desired.

  • Working knowledge of building construction and materials highly desired.

Education: High school diploma and six-to-ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. AS Degree in Design/Drafting or other applicable technology desirable.

Where You Will Work

Located in the beautiful mountains of northern New Mexico near Santa Fe, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Utilities Engineering Services group is seeking an individual with AutoCAD, Ground Penetrating Radar and ArcGIS skills. The Laboratory has a footprint of over 42 square miles with miles of utility lines running throughout the laboratory. This position will primarily support the Laboratory’s penetration process by performing Ground Penetrating Radar scans to allow employees to safety perform penetrations. In addition, this individual will also assist the Infrastructure Information Team compile utility data using global positioning survey systems and produce accurate utility support drawings. These support drawings are used safely perform operations, maintenance, and excavations throughout the laboratory.
