Los Alamos National Laboratory Designer/Drafter 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Working as part of a growing, fast-paced team, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating detailed three-dimensional system designs and perform hydraulic calculations for water-based fire suppression systems using hydraulic design software. The successful candidate will perform a vital role as part of a lab-wide effort to maintain facility compliance in fire safety. The successful candidate will be expected to lead, train and mentor junior designers. Regular functions include but are not limited to; Visits to facilities to evaluate existing conditions; identifying and documenting fire suppression deficiencies; providing hydraulically calculated designs for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs. The successful candidate will contribute to lab-wide organization and documentation of existing fire suppression systems record drawings and calculations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to maintain the required safety and security training and compliance. Adheres to established CAD standards and best practices for efficiency and achievability. Knowledgeable in the application of industry codes and standards governing fire protection in buildings while observing LANL engineering policies; Conduct of Engineering.

  • Ability to work directly with customers to consult; represent the organization; define scope. Works with other disciplines to coordinate deliverables and schedules. Evaluates potential design changes to eliminate future problems. Incorporates lessons learned into standard details and practices.

  • Able to apply hydraulic design principles to address complex and unique water supply and fuel load challenges. Highly proficient with AutoSPRINK hydraulic modeling software.

  • Develops design solutions for unique a design challenges. Understands and applies design limits in non- routine environments. Capable of providing and evaluating cost estimates for design effort and providing expert design advice in field of endeavor. Performs off-project design reviews. May perform drawing checks.

  • Applies knowledge of materials and their suitability application. Makes materials decisions for design packages. Participates in the selection of automation tools for design. Utilizes working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model generation.

  • Provides technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.

  • Work is performed without significant direction. Completed work is reviewed from the perspective of desired results. Ability to manage and mentor several junior designers, work on project teams. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Training/Certifications: NICET certification in water based systems layout.

Education/Experience: This position typically requires a recognized Associate’s Degree in an engineering or technical subject, or equivalent with four to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with fire alarm systems.

  • Familiarity with contracts for construction.

  • Familiarity with creation and function of construction contract documents.

  • Familiarity with SprinkCAD hydraulic software.

  • Familiarity with HAAS hydraulic software.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
