Los Alamos National Laboratory Desktop Support (Computing Systems Professional 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 2 or Computing Systems Professional 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Special Security IT Operations Group (SSO-3) within the Sensitive and Special Operations (SSO) Division is seeking a customer-focused Computing Systems Professional 2 and or 3 Windows System Administrator. SSO-3 is responsible for the desktop and server support for computing environments for the intelligence community at the Laboratory. SSO-3 is organized around Enterprise IT teams who are focused on supporting field intelligence element mission support needs, and a Cybersecurity team who provides the enterprise level security for these computing environments.

The IT Operations Team is currently seeking a Computing Systems Professional 2 and or 3 to provide high-level system administration on the classified network. Responsibilities include:

  • Technical leadership role in design and support of storage area networks (SAN), RAID storage configurations and storage appliances like NetApp

  • Provide outstanding service to customers by developing automated installation and configuration management tools to solve complex problems

  • Answering technical questions and taking corrective action

  • Working effectively in a team environment to provide leadership, resolve issues, prioritize tasks, assist and mentor fellow team members, and participate in continuous process improvement efforts

  • Interacting with customers and peers in a professional and responsive manner, including mentoring, coaching, or giving presentations

Computing Systems Professional 2 ($77,300 – $126,000)

As a member of this team, you will work with the top researchers at the laboratory to support their desktop needs. You will work on a daily basis with your team leader and team members to image, patch and configure various desktop and server systems. Also you will work with our inventory management system to ensure all hardware and software is accounted for appropriately. Additionally, you will work with various video teleconference systems and voip systems to support end user needs, and for laboratory leadership use.

Computing Systems Professional 3 ($94,100 – $155,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be required to provide informal leadership and other tasks in addition to those listed above.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise

  • Knowledgeable on software development methodologies, tools and processes, including: software development lifecycle, programming languages, and VTC component integration.

  • Demonstrated experience with Web-based tools and utilities, server build.

  • Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.

Hardware/Storage Management

  • Familiar with hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

  • Background knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q/TS SCI clearance

Additional Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Expertise

  • Advanced knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles

  • Experience performing advanced level client systems and server/network administration in the Windows environment including Windows 10, and Windows Server

  • Proven experience with the use and execution of authentication methods such as Active Directory and Kerberos; standard network protocols, especially NFS, CIFS;

Hardware/Storage Management

  • Extensive experience with the Installing, configuring, and setting up complex server installations and troubleshooting server problems

  • Expert knowledge architecting and configuring large storage appliances such as NetApp

Policy/Configuration Management

  • Expert knowledge of group policy, Active Directory infrastructure management, and system configuration management methodologies and tools including scripting tools


  • Proven effective customer services skills

  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively and efficiently within a team environment

  • Proven ability to Interact with senior internal and external personnel

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q/TS SCI clearance

Training/Certifications: Advanced vendor certification (RHCSA, RHCE, Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), VMware, NetApp.) is preferred.

Education/Experience for Computing Systems Professional 2: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience for Computing Systems Professional 3: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q/TS SCI clearance, transferable clearance

  • Experience administering Windows, UNIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and desktops

  • Knowledge of project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
