What You Will Do_

ISR-5 is looking for a highly motivated electrical assembly technician to assist with the fabrication of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assembly of printed circuit boards, cables, box wiring, and cable harnesses

  • Provide instrument and system assembly for Hi Reliability Instruments and prototypes

  • Quality assurance inspections

  • Assisting with component kitting responsibilities

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of soldering and mechanical tools.

  • Demonstrated experience in the assembly of High-Reliability hardware including printed circuit boards, cables, cable assemblies, and box wiring. Must have demonstrated experience in printed circuit board assembly, including small footprints surface mount components, FPGAs, surface mount integrated circuits, and assembly of multi-layer boards.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of assembly procedures, materials, and processes used for flight applications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrostatic discharge sensitive (ESD) devices and effects of handling on electronic components based on device sensitivity.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret schematic drawings and printed circuit board layouts.

  • Ability to become IPC and J-Standard certified for electronics assembly and quality assurance inspections.

  • Willingness to learn and become proficient in areas outside of current background (e.g. IPC QA inspector, electronic kitting, procurement)

  • Familiarity with general electronic components along with the ability to interpret electronic component datasheets.

  • Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working with space-based and/or high reliability subsystems and assemblies

  • Willingness to learn and become proficient in, or demonstrated experience with ISR specific databases (i.e. pc/MRP, TeamForge).

  • Demonstrated successful experience working independently and as a team member and demonstrate effective communication skills in working with other team members for success of the project.

  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience performing Quality Assurance Inspections on space based and/or high reliability subsystems and assemblies.

  • Record of commitment to safety, security, environment, and quality

Education:Position requires high school diploma and four-to-six years of previous experience in a specific field of technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An associate’s degree from a recognized technical institute is preferred.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Where You Will Work_

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) in the Intelligence & Space Research Division provides engineering and technical expertise to support the development and deployment of space-based custom instrumentation for national security applications. The Group consists of approximately 40 engineers, designers and technicians (electrical and mechanical) teaming across several ISR Division projects.

This position will belong to the Fabrication & E-CAD Team deployed to the Satellite Nuclear Detonation Detection program, funded through the NNSA NA-22 to provide satellite instrumentation for detecting nuclear detonations in space.
