What You Will Do
The Director of the Office of Science program office reports to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Physical Sciences. Working with senior technical management, the Director is responsible for identifying specific program areas for strategic emphasis (growth, maintenance, and reduction) that support and diversify the Laboratory missions, building and drawing upon technical strengths of the Laboratory consistent with Laboratory and SC strategies. The Director defines the objectives and scope of these efforts bydeveloping, communicating, and executing a customer interface plan for Laboratory SC programs, catalyzing Laboratory participation on SC advisory committees and review committees, supporting and stimulating Laboratory ALD and Deputy Director communication with the SC Director and SC Associate Directors, and promoting change-of-station assignments by Laboratory staff at DOE SC and SC-supported scientific facilities. The Director serves as a resource to LANL scientists and management, providing useful advice and information on SC mission, programs, and strategies. Further, the Director works with peers in the LDRD, Global Security and Nuclear Weapons program offices to understand and develop scientific capabilities relevant to both SC and other DOE and NNSA missions. In particular,the Director partners with the Civilian Nuclear Program Office, the Applied Energy Program Office, and the Global Security Program Office in defining the Laboratory’s energy security strategy. As the primary interface to the Office of Science, this position will require extensive travel.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated scientific or technical leadership in an area supported by the Office of Science.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, executing, evaluating, and reporting on R&D projects and overall program impact.
Track record in leading strategy and translating this into programmatic growth at a national level.
Extensive experience in the development and application of sponsor/customer needs (including their plans, constraints, and requirements).
Extensive broad and deep knowledge of the capabilities of the Laboratory, and effective understanding of the national context in this area, including identifying and analyzing possible competitors, contributors, and teaming arrangements, and effectively describing the Laboratory's strengths in the area.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form to a broad range of audiences as evidenced by record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations to professional organizations, and preparation of technical documents for non-technical audiences.
Management and leadership skills for overseeing a small office, including knowledge, skills, and abilities in resource management (e.g., hiring; termination; coaching; performance assessments; annual salary adjustment processes; managing conflict, etc.) and financial management.
A Ph.D. degree in a scientific or engineering field relevant to the Office of Science programs or equivalent combination of education and experience.
The successful candidate must possess the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
