What You Will Do

The Advanced Engineering Analysis Group (E-13) strives to provide our customers with timely and accurateanswers to complex engineering problems by creatively combining cutting-edge numerical tools. Our customers include the nuclear weapons program, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense, among others. E-13 group expertise includes structural mechanics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, radiation transport, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, probabilistic methods, mechanics of materials, and numerical analysis.

We have a broad need for expertise in the above areas, and are seeking multiple candidates at the R&D Engineer 2 level to perform some or all of the following tasks:

R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900-$148,300)

  • Develop and analyze the results of complex engineering simulations, including mesh generation, specification of load and boundary conditions, post-processing of simulation output, and validation against experimental data

  • Participate in brainstorming sessions with customers and other analysts to determine technical approaches and schedule

  • Interact with test engineers to inform validation experiments

  • Write formal reports and deliver presentations that clearly and effectively communicate analysis conclusions and supporting information

  • Work independently as well as be part of a team

  • Participate in collaborations with DOE, DoD, and international laboratories

  • Travel several times a year

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:

R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900-$165,100)

  • Provide technical leadership to members of an analysis team

  • Lead brainstorming sessions to determine best analysis approach

  • Interface with customers

  • Define strategic plans with both team members and customers to meet long term needs to maintain systems

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Documented record of technical achievement in a relevant engineering discipline, such as mechanical, structural, civil, nuclear, or aerospace engineering

  • Experience with the development and/or application of computational engineering methods and tools, particularly in parallel computing environments

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical reports and presentations

  • Experience meeting deliverable deadlines, both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to perform analysis at an appropriate level for tasks ranging from hand calculations through complex modeling and simulation

In addition to the Job Requirements listed above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:

  • Significant amount of experience performing complex engineering analyses (> 5 years work experience)

  • Demonstrated engineering analysis team leadership experience

  • Demonstrated ability to execute more complex projects

  • Experience integrating and coordinating interdisciplinary work

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with verification and/or validation of simulation results

  • Experience with statistical and/or probabilistic analysis

  • Experience leading interactions with customers or stakeholders

  • Experience with scripting and/or automated pre/post-processing

  • Active Q clearance or equivalent

Education: A minimum of a BS in Engineering from an Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program is required. An MS or PhD in Engineering or a closely related discipline is strongly preferred.
