Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Design Engineer (Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Work as part of the electrical design team designing, maintaining, and upgrading facility electrical and systems at the LANL site.

  • Prepare technical reports and studies.

  • Collect the application, process, safety, and other requirements for the systems and design the system and prepare design concepts that meet the requirements.

  • Develop design details, equipment data sheets, calculations, specifications, etc. that incorporate the applicable design requirements including nuclear safety requirements.

  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design.

  • Support the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations.

  • Develop construction/maintenance installation instructions.

  • Assist in defining maintenance requirements.

  • Implement the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.

  • Work with deployed engineers and work with ES-DO in guidance for all activities linked to the electrical designs and modifications.

  • Lead and develop electrical designs.

  • Execute fundamental project plans that include schedule, scope, and cost.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Electrical Design Engineer 1 (Engineer 1: $75,400-$122,900)

  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical systems.

  • Experience in electrical analyses in accordance with the National Codes and Standards such as IBC, NEC, and IEEE.

  • Knowledge of electrical engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards.

  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination.

  • Knowledge of Project Engineering Practices.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

E lectrical Design Engineer 2 (Engineer 2: $83,30-$136,200)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Engineer 2 job requirements include:

  • Knowledge/Understanding of Conduct of Engineering implementation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards.

  • Ability to apply fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering work planning and design coordination.

  • Ability to apply fundamental knowledge of Project Engineering Practices.

  • Ability to perform work with minimal supervision.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation.

  • Engineer Intern Certification—or certification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Electrical Design Engineer 1/2 Education Required: BS degree in electrical engineering from an ABET Accredit Engineer Program.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

The Electrical Design Engineer position within ES Division is assigned to the Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) Group responsible for design services and the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program implementation at LANL.
