Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a R&D Electrical Engineer. We are seeking R&D Electrical Engineers with interests in digital design, analog design, power supply design or RF design. Responsibilities include the specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical circuits or FPGAs. As a member of our team you will assist in developing custom instrumentation which are utilized in solving significant issues for our nation’s security. If you possess self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical assemblies this is the job for you. ISR-4 is looking for highly motivated early to mid-career electrical engineers to assist in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems. These systems can include:

  • Systems being developed for the space monitoring program in support of the nonproliferation and nuclear event detection missions;

  • Systems for planetary science missions;

  • Smallsat and Cubesat Systems.

The Space Electronics and Signal Processing group (ISR-4) specializes in space-based radiation measurement and basic science missions. ISR has been developing, building, and operating space based systems for over 50 years. In addition, the group develops electronics for terrestrial and airborne scientific and national security applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. The group’s projects receive funding and requirements from various government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA. Projects are executed through a close interaction between all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists, which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. Projects within ISR division are developed from concept to operational support after launch or field deployment. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise: Design experience in one or more of the following electrical engineering focus areas:

  • Analog Design: Fundamentals of analog components, Signal conditioning of electronic sensors, High speed analog to digital conversion

  • Digital Design: Synchronous design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of FPGA or other digital circuits, VHDL or Verilog , Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design and Digital circuit card design

  • RF/Microwave: RF/microwave components and their system applications (amplifiers, receivers, synthesizers); Fabrication and packaging for RF/microwave circuits and systems and Transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity

  • Power Supply Design: Linear regulators as well as switch mode power DC/DC converters; power supply filtering, switching devices, protection and gate drives; power supply control theory, analysis, and testing.

Collaboration/Teaming: Demonstrated ability to work closely with teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships. Ability to network effectively with other engineers and key contacts outside own area of expertise

Communication: Strong written and verbal and presentation skills.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering preferably from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of configuration management and formal verification methods

  • Experience with space-flight hardware development and testing methods desirable.

  • Experience debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes

  • For digital design candidates: Experience with digital communication systems and/or other digital signal processing and experience with high speed digital interfaces

  • Current DOE Q clearance or DoD Top Secret clearance or an SCI level clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
