This Electrical Engineering position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

At the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), you can be part of a team that maintains, improves, and operates a one of a kind linear accelerator that accelerates protons to 84% the speed of light.
In addition to national security research, LANSCE has a vibrant research program in fundamental science, providing the scientific community with intense sources of neutrons and protons to perform experiments supporting civilian research and the production of medical and research isotopes.
The Acceleration Operations Group (AOT-OPS) is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our team of dedicated problem solvers responsible for engineered personnel safety and machine protection systems involving system design, maintenance, operational, and technical support of beam delivery for LANSCE accelerator.
R&D Engineer 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)
The successful candidate will be required to:
Provide maintenance and design support for systems that are used to protect personnel and keep the accelerator from damaging itself.
Participate in the design, testing, implementation and documentation (including drawings and schematics) of new engineered systems, as well as modernization of legacy systems.
Actively design and troubleshoot a wide variety of digital, analog, and mixed signal devices. This may include working with PLCs, FGPAs, Microcontrollers, interface circuitry, PCB layout, and enclosure design.
Complete a formal qualification program in order to demonstrate proficiency regarding systems for which team is responsible.
Provide on-call support during accelerator operational periods on a rotating basis with other team members and occasionally work after hours.
Produce materials for technical reports, documents (including drawings and schematics), and presentations.
R&D Engineer 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:
Manage multiple projects, set priorities, and create detailed action plans.
Take the lead in designing, planning, and executing R&D projects. Will include schedule development, cost estimates, and project status reports.
Interact and collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues, at the team, group, division, and laboratory levels.
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to technologists, technicians, and junior engineers.
Write and review technical documents such as system operating/testing procedures and engineering design changes.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Design experience as an electrical engineer in both analog and digital circuitry.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting analog and digital systems using a variety of equipment (oscilloscopes, DVM’s, function generators, etc.) detailed drawings, diagrams and/or prints.
Experience working with PLCs, FGPAs, and/or Microcontrollers.
Ability to follow detailed procedures and requirements.
Experience with a major CAD or ECAD Program (AutoCad, Mentor Graphics, Altium, etc).
Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:
Ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and create detailed action plans.
Experience providing technical direction to technologists, technicians, and junior engineers.
Project management experience including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status updates.
Experience in writing and reviewing technical documents such as system operating/testing procedures and engineering design changes.
Extensive PLC experience, including formal training in Allen-Bradley networks, ladder logic, and PanelView interface control is desirable.
Experience in relay-based interlock system design.
Ability to translate electronic design projects to drawings and system/circuit description documents.
Demonstrated proficiency in electronic device life cycle. For example, initial requirement, simulation, prototype, testing, schematic, PCB layout, part sourcing, 3D fit and finish, acquisition and/or assembly of device, final installation, operational testing, technical documentation, and subsequent revisions/modifications.
R&D Engineer 2:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
R&D Engineer 3:
Typical requirement is an advanced degree from an accredited college or university or bachelor degree with equivalent experience. Master of Science in electrical engineering preferred.
