Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineer 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic junior-level engineers with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This posting is for multiple Design Engineering positions within the following disciplines: Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical, Pressure Safety, Welding, Fire Protection, Civil, and Structural.

Engineer 1 $85,400—$139,600

The engineering role supports a business function that implements the framework for the disciplined execution of effective engineering at LANL through application of national consensus codes and standards, recognized quality standards, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations. Integrates with other engineering disciplines, document control, safety basis, operations, maintenance, project management, or any other organization that needs engineering input to accomplish LANL deliverables. Identifies and/or leads activities within an engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation and maintenance. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of engineering deliverables. Utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

Engineer 2 $94,100—$155,700

The Engineer 2 will be responsible in leading all aspects of the Engineer 1 position. May be assigned independent work or tasks based on the complexity of the task.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability or proven ability to develop Contract Documents consisting of drawings and specifications to define changes to buildings and infrastructure. Incorporate applicable design requirements including nuclear safety requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Knowledge of engineering principals, codes and standards

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-discipline team of engineers and designers

  • Ability to perform engineering calculations to support design changes.

  • Skilled at performing work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.

  • Ability to represent the design agency through interface and coordination with other engineering disciplines and the customer’s representative during design and construction.

  • Ability to obtain, evaluate, and compare equipment selections from manufacturer’s representatives.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires demonstrated ability, knowledge, and skills identified at the level 1.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certificate.

  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.
