What You Will Do

The Dynamic Structure, Design, & Engineering (J-2) Group within Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division is seeking an Engineering Technologist 3. The Engineering Technologist 3 will use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to produce designs, drawings, and layouts of unique components and systems, both unclassified and classified, and will apply sound engineering design principles to design components and assemblies. The successful candidate will be expected to oversee parts fabrication at LANL machine shops. The candidate will interface with other divisions and groups within LANL and will work closely with R&D engineers to define drawing packages. Occasional overtime may be required.

Engineering Technologist 3

The successful candidate will:

  • Use and apply standard principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems

  • Applies knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aided design (CAD) and CAD/CAM and industrial control software within area of discipline and word processing software.

  • Supports studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, system and equipment

  • Contribute to the fulfillment of projects and organizational objectives.

  • Define modeling standards optimizing CAD best practices for efficiency and achievability. May provide technical direction to other design/drafting personnel in preparation of drawings.

  • Assist engineers in reviewing and recommending action on client requests for engineering change orders and obtain the required approvals.

  • Perform light assembly/disassembly work of prototype equipment for testing and post-test evaluation of performance

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of and experience in completing mechanical assemblies, component, and sub-component models and systems, three dimensional parts and assembly generation

  • Expert knowledge of and experience with machine shop practices as well as coordinating fabrication with machine shops

  • Expert knowledge of and experience working with engineers to create dimensioning strategies

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Creo/Pro Engineer or other 3D CAD systems

  • Expert knowledge of and experience with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 standard on dimensioning and tolerance and familiarity with other ASME codes.

  • Familiarity with document control and records requirements in highly regulated environment.

  • Expert knowledge experience with Windchill software and PDM link or other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

Desired Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of and experience with design definition in the Nuclear Weapons Complex

  • Expert knowledge of and experience with impulsively loaded structure designs such as vessels and supporting hardware

  • Expert knowledge of and experience performing drawing checks

  • Active “Q” clearance

Engineering Technologist 3 Education Required: Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent years of relevant experience in lieu of degree requirement; and at least 8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Where You Will Work

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security. The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation’s premier hydrodynamic testing resource. The Division continually works with the Nevada National Security Site, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons’ components, materials, and systems.

J-2, in collaboration with external experts and other LANL divisions, is responsible for the development of engineering standard and design, analysis, and procurement of impulsively loaded vessels and structures. J-2 also performs Remaining Life Assessments and Fitness for Service evaluations to analyze inherent fabrication flaws or damages resulting from use and recommends essential repairs for continued service. The group maintains the inventory of pressure vessels and structures necessary for J-Division in support of Stockpile Stewardship, and various R&D programs. An Engineering Technologist with extensive design and fabrication knowledge and experience is needed to support the group.
