Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Projects Team Member (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Accelerator Operations Technology (AOT) Division provides systems engineering, program management and operational support to ensure the safety and reliability of the LANSCE accelerator complex. AOT Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance and engineering upgrades necessary to provide high quality beams to a variety of experimental and production facilities. The Mechanical and Design Engineering group (AOT-MDE) performs a number of technical functions in support of AOT Division goals.

As a member of AOT-MDE, the successful applicant for this position will be expected to work as a member of the Engineering Projects team whose primary responsibility is to support projects advancing new methods and technologies related to accelerator systems design and applications such as cutting edge physics experiments, isotope production programs and materials research.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Provide design and analysis of engineering solutions to related engineering challenges.

  • Design and conduct validating experiments.

  • Provide mechanical and thermal hydraulic analytical and computational analysis.

  • Provide component and system design work as well as the design and implementation of experiments.

  • Experience with all aspects of the engineering design cycle: requirements gathering, design, analysis, and testing.

  • Experience with all aspects of experimental work:

  • Design experiments to meet customer requirements,

  • Work with designers to generate design and fabrication drawings,

  • Work with technicians and craft specialists to assemble and instrument the experiments,

  • Produce, understand, evaluate and present results orally and in writing.

  • Provide examples of written and oral communication skills.

  • Mechanical, fluid mechanics and thermal analytical skills.

  • Experience working on projects of all sizes.

  • Experience being a member of a team consisting of designers, technicians and other engineers.

  • Demonstrated experience working with the customer: typically a scientific team or project management internal to LANL or with industry representatives.

Education/Experience: Typical educational requirement is a bachelors, masters or doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program; B.S. (M.S. or Ph.D. ideal) in mechanical engineering, plus two years relevant experience preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Design and analysis experience using SolidWorks software.

  • Analysis experience with advanced computational tools such as ANSYS, CFX or FLUENT.

  • Experience with LabView or similar data acquisition software.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
