What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory, a premier nuclear weapons research and development laboratory, is seeking an individual with broad experience in the application of codes and standards in a highly regulated environment. You will work within a team of individuals recognized as experts in their fields with the goal of creatively and compliantly applying engineering standards to a broad range of facility related engineering functions. You will also interface and coordinate the application of both technical and regulatory requirements and standards related to facility design and configuration management.
As an Engineer 3, you will work within the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Engineering Services Facility Engineering (ES-FE) group and will report to the Conduct of Engineering Office Director. ES-FE is one of nine engineering groups within LANL’s Engineering Services Division that support LANL’s mission. Key responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to:
Serves as a Point of Contact (POC) and resource to the Laboratory and ES Division in the development, maintenance and improvement of Engineering Standards in the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), STD-342-100 through 600, including associated LANL facility engineering program elements;
Works with ESM chapter discipline owners to update and revise ESM chapters to meet current LANL, Department of Energy, and industry standards;
Owns select ESM chapters and is responsible for updating these chapters to align with technical and DOE requirements and industry best practices;
Serves as POC for variances, alternate methods, and clarifications relating to the ESM;
Mentors users in understanding and implementing the ESM and associated program elements;
Functions as POC in the development, delivery, and maintenance of ESM training courses.
Provides interface, coordination and technical input to other Engineering functions, including facility engineering processes, engineer qualification and design.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with the application of codes and standards applicable to nuclear facilities or a similar highly regulated field;
Advanced knowledge of national consensus codes, and standards relating to commercial facilities such as IBC, ASME, and NFPA;
Sound knowledge of Engineering, Project Management, Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Procurement and Operations processes; Expert knowledge in requirements management, configuration management, engineering document control, and performing assessments;
Demonstrated experience in synthesizing requirements and business practices (e.g. DOE, EPRI, INPO, Other DOE sites) into engineering processes and procedures;
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong cross-functional working relationships; Demonstrated experience in implementing process improvements; Experience in producing reports for senior management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 10 years of practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to nuclear safety, facility design, and facility operations such as 10 CFR 830, ASME NQA-1, DOE 0 420.1 C, DOE STD 1189, and DOE STD 1073;
Demonstrated experience providing advice and consultation to management related to engineering.
Experience working with SharePoint or other information management software
Experience in writing, interpreting, enforcing and managing construction specifications
Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, safety basis interaction, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices as applied to nuclear and high hazard facilities
