Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic junior-level Engineering Technologists with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This posting is for multiple Engineering Technologist positions to serve under the Project Engineering, Design Engineering, and/or Field Engineering teams with a focus in one or more of the following disciplines: Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical, Pressure Safety, Welding, Fire Protection, Civil, Structural, and Architectural.

Engineering Technologist 1 ($75,400 – $122,900)

As an Engineering Technologist, you will use principles and theories of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems within discipline(s) in support of engineering and engineering research. You will support engineering/projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. Responsibilities will included, but will not be limited to assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facilities, design, operation, maintenance, project and/or research-based engineering; may provide direction to technicians; and be able to work independently and as part of a team. In addition, you will utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($83,300 – $136,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will contribute to the development of organization’s goals and objectives; assist engineers in reviewing and recommending action on client requests for engineering change orders, and obtain the required approvals; provides technical direction to design and drafting personnel in preparation of drawings; may prepare drawings on CAD; and but limited to, performs technical research and gathers data needed by engineers to solve technical problems and to recommend actions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, and design.

  • Basic knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations and data gathering methods.

  • Basic knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Awareness of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology, within designated discipline.

  • Ability to produce designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

  • Ability to develop, and/or enforce adherence to Contract Documents consisting of drawings and specifications to define changes to buildings and infrastructure.

  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge mathematics, and science to solve routine technical problems in area of discipline. Makes simple calculations and analyses in support of engineering.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Engineering Technologist 2 requires:

  • Demonstrated ability to: provide technical direction to design and drafting personnel in preparation of drawings; assist with technical research and gathers data needed by engineers in area of discipline; perform detailed drawing reviews to ensure drafting/design accuracy, completeness, and format suitability; assist in product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes in area of discipline; and prepare, review and document technical information.

  • Qualification at the higher level requires ability to independently lead all activities listed under the Engineering Technologist 1 position.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree required and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
