Los Alamos National Laboratory Entry Level Detonation Science Research Technician (Research Tec 2 / 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technician 2 $48,600 - $74,700

The Detonator Science and Technology Group, Q-6, is searching for an entry level Research Technician. You will work closely with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians on timing and firing control systems, infrastructure and laser operations to support experiments. You will provide technical support in the areas of research, analysis, development, design, assembly, modifications, oversight, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment used in experimental work. Some of this equipment includes electro/mechanical apparatus, optical devices, analytical instrumentation, gloveboxes, lasers, radiographic equipment, high vacuum and pressure systems, and experimental diagnostics.

Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Research Technician 3 $58,000 - $90,800

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you need to be able to have a variety of skills that will help support experimental work. Including the ability to read drawings and blueprints, use digital test equipment, data analysis, electromagnetic shielding, high-speed data acquisition systems and software and ultrafast timing techniques.

You will work in areas involving high consequences for safety that might be in the form of chemicals, radioactive materials, high explosives, high-power lasers, accelerators, and high-energy devices.

Q-6 is the design authority for primary and auxiliary detonators on current Los Alamos nuclear weapon stockpile systems. Q-6 is also the stewards of Los Alamos National Laboratories provide engineering and design support to the production plants, execute during production of War Reserve detonators, and assesses and reports on surveillance data for individual stockpile detonators. Additionally, we perform R&D on advanced initiation system options for future replacement stockpile systems, including enhanced surety detonators.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Machining & Hand Tool Experience

Experience machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, and saws, and other industrial apparatus. Working knowledge of a variety of hand and machine tools such as drills, crimpers, wire strippers/cutters, torque wrenches, tap/die sets, and air spray guns.

Computer Knowledge

Must have working knowledge in Windows and/or MacOS operating system computers and associated business suite software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience using web-based forms is needed. Must have experience using remote voice/video conference collaboration tools such as Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.

Drawings & Schematics

Ability to interpret technical drawings. Demonstrated ability to recognize anomalies in electronic/mechanical hardware designs quickly/effectively and communicate them to engineers.

Team Dynamics

Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professionalscientists, engineers, technicians, and customers , including the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technician 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Electrical Testing and Troubleshooting

Demonstrated experience testing interconnected systems of electronic equipment for qualification and troubleshooting purposes. Must have experience timing electrical cables with devices such as time-domain refelctometers, oscilloscopes, delay generators, etc. Maitains electrical-related certifications.

High-Explosives Environment

Must have demonstrated ability to work in an environment where high-explosives are present and be familiar with high-explosive safety programs.


Demonstrated ability to work with computer-based data-acquisition systems acquiring digital and/or digitized data during timing-critical experiments. Experience with customized instrument control and acquisition with software such as LabView.

Education/Experience for Research Technician 2: Position requires a High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Experience related to mechanical, electronic, and optical techniques used in timing and firing control systems is preferred.

Education/Experience for Research Technician 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Experience directly related to mechanical, electronic, and optical techniques used in timing and firing control systems.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of nuclear weapons concepts and the U.S. stockpile or other weapon designs.

  • Thorough knowledge of DOE and LANL safety policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of systems engineering and requirements management principles and processes.

  • Experience with drafting tools such as ACAD, Visio, etc.

  • Strong understanding of schematics and hardware configurations.

  • Strong experience in electro-mechanical and optical hardware. This includes optical cables/connectors, welding optical fibers, cleaning/polishing optical fibers, and testing optical fiber runs for timing and loss.

  • Experience in formal drafting requirements

  • Experience participating in hazard analysis reviews.

  • Experience with weapon component design, fabrication and assembly techniques, as well as advanced fabrication processes.

  • Experience with professional-level photography equipment and strong understanding of focal length, aperture, and depth-of-field.

  • Experience with nanosecond-accuracy timing and measurement systems and instruments.

  • Ability to solder wires/connectors.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
