Los Alamos National Laboratory Environmental Professional 2 (Water Quality Compliance) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join our multi-disciplinary water quality team within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. You will utilize your education and experience in this early career environmental professional position to assist in meeting our water quality requirements while widening the depth and breadth of your skills on our multi-disciplinary team. Our team provides technical leadership and direction throughout LANL for compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Water Quality Team Leader within the Environmental Compliance Program Group this Environmental Professional 2 will support:

  • The Water Quality Team in the submission of Notices of Intent (NOIs) under the requirements of 20.6.2.1201 NMAC (surface water and groundwater regulatory programs) for various discharges of treated wastewater; collecting and reporting of compliance and performance data; preparing internal/external correspondence, and assisting in responses to regulatory agencies.

  • The Laboratory’s compliance with the NPDES Pesticide Permit program by ensuring proper permit coverage for the facility, maintaining contact with internal groups applying pesticides, and internal/external reporting.

  • Collaboration with the NPDES Program Lead to improve compliance with the NPDES Industrial Outfall Permit, utilizing Environmental Management Systems to facilitate proactive identification of potential compliance issues. Follow through of ground-truthing, sampling, and communication with facilities to improve water discharge compliance processes.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Implementing Regulations

An experienced professional with an understanding of groundwater and surface water regulations including compliance and/or permitting programs. Specifically, generating and maintaining records according to established protocols and regulatory requirements under state regulations and/or EPA regulations for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program.

Problem Solving

Ability and experience to work well in both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing team-based environments through strong interpersonal skills while working effectively within a team environment and providing excellent customer service. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

Communication Skills

Demonstrated ability to communicate both verbally (presentations, one on one, meetings) and written (correspondence and reports) in a clear concise manner with superiors, peers, customers, other personnel, and regulators. Proven customer service orientation and consultation skills sufficient to partner with client organizations to implement sound environmental practices.

Water Quality Program Experience

A combination of experience in water quality programs including both field experience (data collection, inspections, and sampling of outfalls, surface waters, and groundwater wells) and non-field experience (environmental management systems, models, geographic information systems, and commercial software packages) used to interpret and report environmental data/information. NPDES Pretreatment Program experience highly desired.

Education/Experience: Requires a BS in Earth Science/Environmental Science/Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 5 years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Education and Training

An advanced degree in water resources, hydrology or related degree.

Experience Working at a Large Complex Facility

An awareness of organization structure and environmental, health and safety policies, practices and procedures including tools to evaluate potential upcoming environmental projects, track compliance issues, and ensure that required work is documented clearly.

Collaboration

Demonstrated ability to create positive energy within a team environment resulting in an increased role of responsibility.

Data Evaluation

Some experience evaluating hydrologic data, water quality data, or statistical methods for surface water systems and application of these results under a regulatory environment.

Clearance

This position will be cleared to a DOE “Q” clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
