Los Alamos National Laboratory Field Engineering Technologist 2 (Engineering Technologist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Engineering Services (ES) Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.

The Field Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 2) will provide input, guidance and support for LANL craft in high level trouble-shooting and repair efforts on commercial grade heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and multi-zone systems that incorporate pneumatic, electronic, and/or programmable logic controls. This would include working with Maintenance BAS craft and Building Automation Engineering to prioritize, schedule, document and manage field repair work. The FET will also review drawings or plans for HVAC modifications, and oversee the installation of components that require controls programming and connection to new and existing Building Automation Systems.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Provides guidance and oversight to fitters and electricians in troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of commercial heating and cooling systems control components, including global and unit controllers, actuators, sensors, VAV components, VFDs, motors, chillers, boilers, and air conditioning systems.

  • Provides oversight and guidance on the testing and calibration of new component installations. Coordinates seasonal testing checkouts.

  • Interprets as-built building blueprints and recommends system modifications for upgrade projects in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Researches and selects materials for HVAC systems installation, repair, and maintenance based on LANL standardized components.

  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of trades experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

  • Knowledge of HVAC installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance. As well as knowledge of troubleshooting and repair of digital controls systems, including unit controllers, sensors, actuators, and motors. Proficiency in mechanical systems, building materials, and emergency maintenance.

  • Skill in the use of computers and basic network configurations. Understanding of principles and basic components of DC electronics. Basic knowledge of building automation user interfaces, preferably Alerton, Automated Logic, and Trane.

  • Ability to use hand and power tools, and diagnostic equipment applicable to the trade. Capacity to develop heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system modification plans. Ability to read electrical/electronic diagrams, blueprints, technical manuals, and control logic blocks in software. Ability to document and track preventive maintenance activities.

  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.

  • Ability to obtain a Q Clearance


Current or recent Journeyman's Refrigeration or Electrical Licenses (JR) and one other HVAC/Plumbing related Journeyman's Licenses or equivalent military experience.


Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree required and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with industrial control systems, and metering devices, and remote monitoring

  • Knowledge of information technology architecture and communications networks for industrial control systems, including familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, MSTP, ARCNET protocols

  • Experience either with energy and HVAC audits or commissioning work

  • Experience with Automated Logic, Alterton, or Trane building automation systems.

  • National Laboratory work experience

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
