Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Maintenance Lead (Technical project Manager 1-2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Technical Project Manager 1 / Technical Project Manager 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Technical Project Manager 1 ($77,300 - $126,000)

As a Technical Project Manager 1, you will be expected to perform tasks as requested under general supervision and oversight. Generate, revise, review, and implement institutional Preventive Maintenance Instructions (PMIs), receive and track system impairments, coordinate critical spare inventory, and support replacement projects. Work directly with fire protection crews to ensure systems across the laboratory are installed, maintained, and repaired in accordance with applicable codes, standards, laboratory policies, and manufacturer recommendations. Provide technical field direction for troubleshooting and repairs in systems across the laboratory which may include subcontract support resources. Review design, installation, and commissioning of new systems to ensure they are maintainable and meet code requirements as necessary.

Technical Project Manager 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Technical Project Manager will be expected to perform tasks as requested with limited supervision or oversight. Perform the previously identified tasks at a level commensurate of a Subject Matter Expert (SME). Provide expert level knowledge in the application of code requirements for maintenance, installation, design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair of fire suppression systems.

Job Requirements for a Technical Project Manager 1:

  • General familiarity with applicable codes that cover maintenance, installation, and repair of fire suppression systems.

  • Basic technical knowledge in the design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fire suppression systems.

  • Complete diagnosis of maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting issues within the fire protection shop, give direction and guidance to technicians and craft members.

  • Receive system impairments and track their status from issuance to closure.

  • Serve in a team environment and assist craft, technicians, system owners, engineers, and management to find code compliant solutions.

  • Willingness to train fire protection technicians and craft workers to facilitate the completion of normal maintenance and basic troubleshooting activities.

  • Assist management by producing and presenting reports, presentations, white papers to assist in the support, effectiveness, and customer implementation of necessary maintenance and code requirements.

Training/Certifications at lower level: Willingness to pursue NICET Certifications, or equivalent, in Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems and Fire Alarm Systems.

Job Requirements for a Technical Project Manager 2:

Qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Possess and maintain a high level of proficiency in applicable codes that cover maintenance, installation, and repair of fire suppression systems.

  • Provide seasoned technical expertise on the design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fire suppression systems.

  • Serve as a point of contact for high level maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting issues within the fire protection shop, give direction and guidance to technicians and craft members.

  • Assess the impact of received system impairments and track their status from issuance to closure.

  • Foster a team environment and actively guide craft, technicians, system owners, engineers, and management to a code compliant solution.

  • Willingness to train fire protection technicians and craft to facilitate the passing of detailed knowledge and lessons learned in regards to normal maintenance and advanced troubleshooting techniques.

  • Assist management by producing and presenting reports, presentations, white papers to assist in the support, effectiveness, and customer implementation of necessary maintenance and code requirements.

Training/Certifications at higher level: Current NICET Certifications, or equivalent, in Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems and Fire Alarm Systems or the ability to gain certification within the first year of employment.

Education/Experience for Technical Project Manager 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Technical Project Manager 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is preferred for this level.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, typing or keyboarding.

Desired Qualifications for higher and lower level:

  • Manufacturer specific fire alarm panel training/certification for Notifier, Edwards, Honeywell,

  • tc.

  • Additional certifications in Special Hazard Equipment.

  • Experience training maintenance personnel.

  • Experience establishing, maintaining, and coordinating a maintenance program.

  • The ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
