Los Alamos National Laboratory Firing Site Research Tech (Research Technician 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
M-3 is seeking a qualified Research Technician to join our team. The Research Technician will provide field support to all aspects of fielding and firing explosives experiments. This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 3 or Research Technician 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Firing Site Research Technician 3 ($53,500 - $82,800)
The successful candidate will:
Under the direction of the Firing Leader/Team Leader, work to maintain firing sites and experimental facilities, e.g. tasks for orderliness, cleanliness, inventory, diagnostic equipment, supply procurement, coordination of craft work, site and waste clean-up.
Under the direction of the Firing Leader, perform setup of diagnostics and mitigation for explosives tests.
Assist the Firing Leader in executing explosives tests safely and securely.
Participate in preparation of hazard analyses, safety documents and work procedures.
Under the direction of the Firing Leader, work with explosives, class 4 lasers, cryogens, chemicals, pressurized systems, energized electrical equipment, pulsed-power systems, hand operated power tools and radioactive materials.
Firing Site Research Technician 4 ($64,400 - $102,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technician 4 will be required to:
Take leadership in maintaining firing sites and experimental facilities, e.g. tasks for orderliness, cleanliness, inventory, diagnostic equipment, supply procurement, coordination of craft work, site and waste clean-up.
Take leadership in setup of diagnostics and mitigation for explosives tests.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Intermediate computer skills with common applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel.
Experience with working to a set of defined requirements and regulations (e.g., explosives safety, electrical safety), and working safely and securely in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with equipment repair and equipment assembly/disassembly.
Experience with working from engineering drawings or electrical diagrams.
Demonstrated competency in performing technical work in hazardous environments e.g. with mechanical, electronic, optical, chemical or pressure/vacuum systems.
Strong teaming skills. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers. Ability to follow work instruction.
Additional Job Requirements for Research Technician 4:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Research Technician 4 level requires:
Demonstrated proficiency with performing technical work in hazardous environments e.g. with mechanical, electrical, optical, chemical or pressure/vacuum systems.
Ability to follow procedures and work instruction, and to complete assigned tasks with limited direct supervision.
Education/Experience at lower level : Requires an associate's degree in a relevant field and a three-to-five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at higher level: Requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading Vision, Ability to Discriminate Speech, Ability to Hear in a Normal Range, Sitting, Standing, Climbing Stairs, Typing or keyboarding.
Experience with explosives firing operations and/or handling energetic materials (e.g., reactive chemicals, high explosives).
Experience working in moderate to high hazard industrial or research environments.
Experience with diagnostics typically used in explosives testing: optical/fiber systems, high speed cameras, x-ray systems, oscilloscopes/digitizers, delay generators, thermocouples, pressure sensors.
Experience in the operation of forklifts, bobcats, heavy equipment.
DOE or DoD Security Clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
