What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research and Development Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D Engineer 2 $94,100 - $155,700
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Flight Integration Engineering group, Q‐19, is a node critical to successful mission execution of LANL’s Weapon Stockpile Modernization division. Here, you can invest your technical capabilities into test body design, aircraft flight line testing, ground- and submarine-based missile testing, and world-class ground testing operations required to assure the unwavering ability to deliver the US nuclear deterrent. Q-19 integrates teams of highly skilled and motivated engineers and technicians to define requirements, develop component to full system designs, and employ testing methods for design assessment.
As a Flight Testing Design and Development Engineer, you will work closely with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on experiment and design support for flight test integration. This role will demand experience in design, engineering, data acquisition, and fabrication and testing of flight systems using state-of-the-art computational simulation tools and engineering test facilities that include functional delivery system platforms.
Responsibilities associated with the design of flight tests will require executing the complete systems engineering process including: requirements development, prototype manufacture, assembly, and advanced technology implementation to conduct flight testing. The Division works in close liaison with production facilities across the nuclear security enterprise, as well as with customers in the US Navy and Air Force.
R&D Engineer 3 $113,100 - $190,900
In addition to what was outlined at the R&D Engineer 2 level, this position will require leading peer reviews across organizations or disciplines, mentoring and training junior staff, and eveloping and/or contributing ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. An R&D Engineer 3 should be able to lead technical research, and gather data needed to solve technical problems and to recommend actions.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience in one or more of the following components of Engineering/System Engineering and Design; concept and need statement development; engineering requirements development, design integration, iteration and optimization; engineering qualification and certification; assembly/production; prototyping and prototyping technologies; inspection; testing; data collection and reduction; reporting; etc. Experience in one or more of the following disciplines; mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, systems engineering.
Ability to work with and communicate effectively with multiple technical teams. Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to develop and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Ability to effectively manage competing priorities. Experience with procedural compliance. Experience in successfully executing a high-pace project with limited direction.
This position requires a commitment to LANL’s safety and security culture. Evidence of a strong safety record in previous work assignments.
Additional Job Requirements for the R&D Engineer 3 : In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Thorough knowledge of and experience in leading, designing, planning, and executing research and development projects.
Experience with developing system requirements, and flight test specifications.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred
Familiarity with the development of component and systems requirements and specifications
Experience with specifying and designing data acquisition and instrumentation
Demonstrated technical leadership of small teams and/or developing technical strategies for organizations.
Familiarity with Air Force and Navy flight & test programs
Understanding of NNSA and DOD qualification processes
Knowledge of nuclear weapon systems and delivery vehicles
Active Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
