Los Alamos National Laboratory Forestry Post Bachelor's Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The selected candidate would work with Forest Stewardship staff from the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division and Wildland Fire Management staff in the Emergency Management Division to support watershed based planning and monitoring of wildland fire mitigation, forest thinning, and forest health projects across the Laboratory’s approximately 40 square miles. The position requires collaboration with biologists on compliance requirements for federally-listed threatened and endangered species, migratory birds, and other sensitive species.

Examples of potential projects include:

  • Forest inventory and fuels inventory and mapping

  • Pre-and post fire mitigation treatment or thinning treatment monitoring and mapping using standard forest inventory and vegetation monitoring methods, remote sensing, and photo monitoring

  • Fuel moisture monitoring in collaboration with the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division for instrumentation validation to support wildland fire modeling

  • GPS mapping of insect and pathogen affected trees, invasive species, old trees, and urban trees for management planning

  • Applied research activities including literature reviews, management plans, summary reports, and documentation of mitigation and restoration activities for adaptive management

  • Defensible space, utility corridor, or fire road inspection and management planning

  • Invasive species management planning

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with general ecological/forestry field work and general laboratory practices

  • Working knowledge of GPS units, data management, and map skills

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Education/Experience at lower level : Bachelor’s degree in forestry, ecology, fire ecology, biology, environmental sciences, natural resources management or related field

Desired Qualifications:

  • Forest/Fire ecology, wildland fire, forest inventory and monitoring, invasive species management, or fuels inventory field experience

  • Natural inclination for collaboration and customer service

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects under limited direction and strong attention to detail

  • Familiarity with erosion control best management practices, such as sustainable roads and trails

Note to Applicants:

  • Eligibility is limited to students that have completed a bachelor's degree within the past 3 years, but not been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program

  • Cumulative 3.0/4.0 GPA

  • Appointments are up to 2 years maximum and the student may work casual, part-time or full-time

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
