What You Will Do

The Applied Computer Science group (CCS-7) is the Laboratory’s vanguard research organization for scientific applications at extreme scale. The four focus areas of the group are (1) applications, algorithms, and hardware co-design; (2) collaborative programming and development of scientific applications; (3) programming models, runtime systems and tools; and (4) data science and visualization at scale. Projects typically involve collaborations inside and outside of the Laboratory, in line with the group’s commitment to engage with theoretical, experimental, and computer-systems scientists to develop integrated, cross-disciplinary solutions to challenges posed by next-generation extreme-scale computing. Billion-way parallelism, deep memory and storage hierarchies, and heterogeneous computing are forcing us to rethink how we enable applications at the extreme scale and we are one of the few groups in the world focusing on solutions to these issues.

CCS-7 invites applicants for a position of Scientist 2 or 3 to join the Future Architectures and Applications Team and strengthen our Institutional Computing program, which provides assistance to open science applications to adapt and prepare for emerging processor and high-performance system architectures. The successful candidate is expected to be a self-starter, taking initial direction and requirements from technical project leads, and to work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team to support the open science high performance computing community.

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Scientist 2 ($87,800-$144,800) The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Conduct research and implement new methods, frameworks and programming models in support of scientific application development

  • Work both independently and collaboratively with other members of the team after receiving initial direction and requirements from technical project leads

  • Deliver based on provided direction, for example, provide reference implementations for techniques described in a research paper or a technical report, or improve the efficiency / performance of a section of code within a larger application

  • Conduct a literature search to find prior research related to an idea

  • Work with team members to make modifications and additions to existing code and methods

  • Work with team members to document, design and implement new ideas and approaches for newer architectures and improve those for existing ones

Scientist 3 ($96,600-$161,300)In addition to the duties of a Scientist 2, the successful candidate will be required to:

  • Contribute to proposals forresearch and implementation of new methods, frameworks and programming models in support of scientific application development

  • Interact with people from other teams, groups, divisions, directorates, and programs to create collaborations

  • Work with limited direction, for example, execute work based on a fragment of an idea or a half-formed idea and carry it to completion

  • Mentor junior scientists and students

  • Present the results of research at conferences, workshops, and meetings

  • Represent LANL and the DOE at workshops and meetings

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated fluency in a high-performance computing language such as C/C++ or Fortran

  • Demonstrated experience in parallel programming

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with advanced architectures, such as heterogeneous systems with Intel Xeon Phi or GPUs

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance and provide creative implementations for technically complex computer science problems

  • Demonstrated flexibility in adopting and using new programming models, languages and techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team

  • Demonstrated software development and engineering experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment by networking with internal and external personnel in own area of expertise

  • Demonstrated ability to accept initial direction and requirements from technical project leads

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to complete deliverables by a deadline

  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience writing proposals and obtaining funding for researchand implementation of new methods, frameworks and programming models in support of scientific application development

  • Demonstrated experience presenting the results of research at conferences, workshops, and meetings

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with current best-practices tools and techniques for software development, e.g., concurrent revision control systems (Git, Mercurial), documentation (Doxygen, Pandoc), unit and integrated testing (Google Test) and workflow

  • Experience in high performance computing at large scale

  • Experience with OpenMP

  • Experience with GPU programming

  • Experience with threaded programming

  • Fluency in multiple high-performance computing languages

Education:Minimum of an M.S. in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience

Additional Details:
