What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The successful candidate will work in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division, and will be primarily engaged with the Atmosphere, Climate, and Ecosystem Sciences and Computational Earth Science Teams. Team members will support and enrich your research and professional goals through their outstanding breadth and depth of expertise in their respective fields.
Your research will include:
Developing and validating a global river network model by fusing various geospatial datasets
Using the model to improve flood risk predictions at large scales
Working with the National Water Model for Alaskan river basins for testing and improving cold region simulations
A successful research project will require you to blend knowledge of hydrological processes and “big” geospatial data through integration and communication with hydrologists, earth scientists, and computational experts.
While the research goals for these projects have been established, there is significant flexibility in the way these goals can be achieved. A self-motivated, creative postdoc will find this environment conducive to intellectual and professional growth. A comprehensive knowledge of the novel components of the research activities will not be necessary as on-the-job training will support the candidate’s success through a collaborative team atmosphere.
We seek applications from diverse candidates with expertise in any of the following research areas: modeling streamflow, river fluxes and/or flood risk, geospatial data assimilation and analysis, watershed science, or computer science. The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of observational and computational hydrologists, geomorphologists, and computer scientists in effort to develop a global model of river connectivity, implement a flow routing scheme, and validate the model with observed streamflow data. The candidate will also work with an already-implemented National Water Model to test snow and permafrost parameterizations and use available observed and remotely sensed data to evaluate and improve model performance. This research will involve accessing, manipulating, and fusing various remote-sensing-derived products, and the candidate will have access to ample high-performance computing resources.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
A basic understanding of hydrological processes
Proficiency in a programming language (Python highly desirable)
Experience with geospatial data (raster and/or vector types)
An ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse team environment
Education/Experience :A PhD in earth science, computer science, civil engineering, climate science, geography, or closely related fields is highly preferred, although exceptional candidates with an MS and relevant experience will also be considered.

publications in refereed journals and a history of successful research in collaborative team environments
