Los Alamos National Laboratory Global Security Program Senior Director (Senior Director) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

You will lead the delivery of cutting-edge solutionsto the national nonproliferation, arms control, counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism, bio-security, cyber defense, intelligence, DoD and homeland security communities. Our solutions addresscontemporary threats and preparefor future threats.

As Senior Director for Global Security (GS) Programs, you will report to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for GS andbepart of the ALDGS Leadership Team that provides leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning for the $800M GS Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Internal to LANL, the Senior Director providesexecutive-level leadership for a diverse teamresponsible foranalytic and experimental programs. The Senior Director interfaces regularly with the LANL Director, the LANL Leadership Team, and the LANL Board of Directors.As the lead for GS Programs, you will oversee work acceptance, risk management, and effective business practices and serve as the internal senior interface for GS programs for major procurement, legal, finance, policy, Laboratory Directed R&D (LDRD), tech-transfer, counter-intelligence and external assignments.

External to LANL, the Senior Director provides a regular interface on GS programs with the NNSA field office and senior DOE/NNSA officials. The Senior Director is expected to brief Members of Congress, Congressional staffers, and other governmental officials on GS programs and emerging threats. The Senior Director providesexecutive level customer and stakeholder interfaces and manages the LANL team of outstanding GS Program Directors including permanent assignees in the Washington, DC area.As part ofyourstrategic approach to external engagement, the Senior Director regularly hosts and coordinates senior visitors to LANL.

The Senior Director will work internally with other lab organizations to develop lab-wide capabilities and willcoordinate externally with other DOE laboratories and partners domestically and abroad. Our work and workers are deployed globally.This job requires a substantial amount of travel.

Depending on the skills and background of the successful candidate, this position may also include the role of LANL Field Intelligent Element (FIE) Director (as part of the DOE FIE) or other institutional roles as assigned.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Significant record of technical leadership including experience in leading broad, complex organizations or programs. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategies that accomplish internal and external objectives as well as steward capabilities required for long-term impact.

Program Development and Sponsor Rela tions: Experience in program development, acquiring significant funding, and representing programs internally and externally to sponsors, stakeholders, and review boards.

Science: Outstanding record of scientific research and/or programmatic accomplishments in global security application areas as evidenced by leadership of large projects and publications, citations, and presentations.

Collabora tion and Communica tion: Experience in developing collaborations, encouraging teamwork, building consensus, and effective communication with staff, sponsors, partners, and stakeholders.

Management: Experience managing personnel, negotiating agreements, managing finances, delegating, and building consensus among staff members for a diverse organization.

  • A proven track record of attracting, evaluating, mentoring, developing, motivating and retaining a creative and diverse workforce in a technical organization with a commitment to AA/EEO/Diversity /Inclusion/Belonging objectives.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing the safety and security envelope of a large organization with diverse research facilities within a sensitive or classified environment.

  • Experience implementing, enforcing, and providing clear guidance for compliance with institutional policies and government regulations affecting program accomplishment, research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.


Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q and SCI clearances, which require U.S. citizenship. Dual citizenship is permitted in very limited circumstances.


Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline and a minimum fifteen years of experience in a national security field related to nuclear weapons, explosive design or manufacturing, nonproliferation, arms control, intelligence, cyber security, or bio-security and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Education

Advanced degree in a related field preferred.

Government Relations

Successful record of working with federal, state and/or local government leaders in communicating complex institutional messages and partnering to inform strategies or implement solutions to technical challenges.

National Laboratories

Experience at or with one or more DOE National Laboratories. Demonstrated experience interfacing with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) management and a broad knowledge of current LANL capabilities, operations and activities.

Active Clearance

An active DOE “Q” clearance and TS/SCI access.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
